Dear GRE Families,

It has been a whirlwind of a week for students, families and staff! We are working very hard to give you as much information as we can when it becomes available. There are so many questions but rest assured we paying close attention to the updates and information coming out from our government. Although we won't be face to face for at least three weeks, updates will come out as often as available to keep you informed!

This week teachers will be working on preparing remote learning options that will be available for students the week of March 30th through April 3rd. Beginning March 30th, teachers will post remote learning work daily in their Schoology groups. Many parents are looking for resources and ideas before March 30th. This newsletter will include ideas for you to use that you can begin whenever you are ready.

Most importantly to our staff is to make sure that all our students have what they need during this shut down. If you or someone you know is in need of food, WIFI access, hygiene or other items, please reach out to me at katethoma@bwls.net.

Stay safe, practice patience and be kind to one another-

Kate Thoma

Principal, General Rosecrans Elementary

1. VOTE Tuesday! Our District has an operational levy on the ballot this Tuesday, March 17th. This ballot issue will not raise taxes; it is a continuing levy that would replace a levy that is set to expire at the end of 2020. This levy represents 12% of our budget, and it is crucial in funding daily expenses such as teachers, utilities, and supplies. To vote in the election, voter registration must be completed or updated by February 18. For more information, please visit the levy page on our website: March 17, 2020 Levy Information

2. Parents will still be able to pick up medications and any other necessary items in the offices between 9:00 am-3:00pm on Monday, March 16th. If this does not work for your family, please email District Nurse Megan Truax for medications or contact your building principal or secretary regarding other items.

3. If your children are currently receiving free or reduced meal benefits, we will be providing breakfast and lunch during the period of March 17-March 20 and March 30-April 3. Please contact Linda Klamfoth either by email at lindaklamfoth@bwls.net or 740.965.8958 for details or if you have questions. Meals will not be available from the school during spring break.

4. Be sure to check the District Schoology updates from Mrs. Hamburg to stay tuned or look back at important information that has been shared. If you are having trouble logging in to Schoology, please reach out to your teacher or our office tomorrow, March 16th from 9:00-3:00.

Specials Spotlight: Art with Mrs. Doran

You may have heard that Mrs. Doran is back! I truly enjoyed being home the past three months with Colby soaking in all the baby snuggles and smiles, but received a warm welcome back this week! It was so nice returning to all the amazing students at GRE. Ms. Duffy did an amazing job holding down the fort while I was gone and I enjoyed seeing everything that they created!

CONGRATULATIONS! We had three students who had their artwork honored at the state level this month for Youth Art Month in downtown Columbus! Great job to...

Maggie Adams, 3rd grade, Young People's Art Exhibition

Hunter Hyton, 2nd grade, Central Ohio Art Education Association Show

Allie Murphy, kindergarten, Youth Art Month

Show

What’s been going on in the art room...

KG- Full day students are learning about the artist Dale Chihuly, his glass sculptures and how he makes them through glass blowing. Students are working on creating their own “glass” macchia bowl inspired by Chihuly’s work.

1st- Students are learning that portraits are a picture of a person and a self portrait is a picture of YOURSELF! Students are working to create their self portrait and then focusing on the warm and cool color groups to add color in a special way next week with “magic tissue paper!”

2nd- Students are learning about an artist who was from Columbus named Aminah Robinson! They are creating self portrait collages inspired by her use of different textures, fabrics, buttons, and other materials. This week students looked at self portraits and created a cartoon version for their collage.

3rd- Students started designing their stained glass pictures with Ms. Duffy and they are now working on painting the “lead lines” and adding the colored glass portion of their pictures. Students became experts in stained glass and were excited to fill me in on what they learned this week when I got back!

4th- Students are anxiously awaiting for their clay projects to dry and be fired so we can glaze them! In the meantime, students were excited to begin planning their “Ugly Doll” inspired soft sculptures. This week students were introduced to the story behind Ugly Dolls and how one doll eventually turned into a million dollar company! They then began their practice sketches for their own design and will be creating a pattern next week.
