Maillet's Kindergarten Newsletter
Week Of February 2nd
Highlights from last week....
In Phonics, we continued learning about digraphs (wh, th, ch, sh, and ck) and practice working with them in text. We also practiced using them in dictation. Most of our children are really understanding the concept and learning about sentence structure at the same time. We will keep working until we master the skill!
We practiced writing our first and last name on our work. They are really working hard on this skill. Some of my friends have VERY LONG names! Please reinforce this at home as well.
In Reader's Workshop, we continued with the strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?" Because this is a newly introduced skill, we will be working on this skill for a few weeks before we can move on. If your child masters this skill before we move on, I will work with them independently to challenge them at their level.
In Math, we continued to compare using words more, less, fewer, same as and equal.
In Science, we learned about magnets. We learned the vocabulary words attract and repel. Please see our friends having fun with magnets.
In Social Studies, we learned about important American symbols. We will learned about the flag, the national anthem, the president and the words to the Pledge of Allegiance.
In our Second Step program, we continued to learn about our own feelings.
We will read several books about America.
Which one has more or less capacity?
Roll, count and write
Practicing counting and writing the numbers
Fun way to build math skills!
A peek at our learning this week....
In Phonics, we are going to continue learning about digraphs (wh, th, ch, sh, and ck) and practice working with them in text. We will also work on CVCe words. We talked about it last week, but we will really work on seeing these words in text. Many of my friends are at a reading level where they see these words frequently, so they will need to recognize the pattern and know what to do when they encounter these words.
We have also been practicing writing our first and last name on our work. Please reinforce this at home as well.
In Reader's Workshop, we will be focusing on looking at the picture, the first letter and then looking through the word and sound out the letters that we know. This is where the majority of the class is with regards to their reading. Have them show you some of their strategies at home. They are really doing great! Please keep reading those books that I have been sending home weekly with your child. Also, please practice the new sight words that went home last week. The more sight words they know, the better readers they will become!
In Math, we will continue to compare using words more, less, fewer, same as and equal. We will be counting and using numbers to find out which is more or less.
In Science, we are going to be learning ground hogs and shadows.
In our Second Step program, we will continue to learn about our own feelings.
We will read several books about shadows and groundhogs.

Many parents are asking what the class needs for supplies. We could use some Clorox Wipes and paper towels. Thank you in advance.
Please practice letters and sounds with your child nightly! Thank you!
