Minges Brook Elementary
March 10, 2023
Mrs. Giddings Good News to Home
Great things are continuing to happen at Minges Brook! Being a Trauma Informed Resilience Focused school building means that we prioritize Social Emotional Learning by focusing on 5 areas throughout the year. We are continuing to learn to understand & manage emotions, set & achieve goals, feel & show empathy for others, make and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.
Individual classroom teachers teach a weekly Social Emotional Learning lesson and set goals to ensure Honest, Caring, Respectful, Responsible, Safe actions. All classrooms have met their most recent goals and we held a building-wide celebration this week! We wore jammies and played board games to recognize our hard work. Talk with your child(ren) about their favorite part, and the importance of, following The Spartan Way in all that we do (at both school and home). As always, please reach out with wonderings or for support.
Take Care,
Renee

Outside attire reminder!
Please make sure your student(s) are prepared for outdoor recess daily. Proper attire includes: coat, snow pants, boots, hat, gloves/mittens and a scarf.
All students are expected to go outside for recess except if they have a medical reason from your healthcare provider that is documented in writing. If they are not wearing boots, they will be asked to remain on the paved areas of the playground to ensure dry feet.
Students are asked to have a change of clothes in their backpack. The playground gets muddy!
The following is our District Policy regarding recess. This is found online in the Student Handbook.
Because of the variability of temperature and other factors (i.e., sunny day or overcast day), the wind chill index is not the only criterion used to determine whether or not children go outdoors for recess. The children will not go outside for recess when the temperature is zero or below. When the temperature is above zero, elementary school personnel will make the decision whether or not to go outside at recess. All students are expected to go outside for recess and, therefore, need to dress appropriately. If a child is well enough to be in school, unless they have a written statement from a physician, the expectation is that they will participate in outdoor recess.
Please feel free to contact the office with any questions/concerns. 269-565-4500.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
The arrival and dismissal procedures are very important in keeping students safe. Please see below for a detailed description:
Arrival:
Students get dropped off by vehicle on Lincoln Hill, right before the driveway to the parking lot. Staff will be there to open car doors and let students out. Please do not get out of the car to assist them. Please drive up to where staff are so the lane does not get too congested.
The parking lot will be blocked off from 7:50-8:20. No one can get in or out of the lot between those times, Minges Brook staff included. The reason being is it causes a safety issue for walkers crossing the lot. Please plan accordingly.
- Doors will open at 8:20
- Students will exit their vehicles and enter the building through the main entrance
- Students will walk directly to their classroom with all of their belongings
- It is very important that students not be dropped off prior to 8:15 as there is limited staff available to supervise before then
Dismissal:
- Students exit the building at 3:25
- Each teacher has a designated meeting spot in the front of the school for students that are picked up. This will be marked with signage.
- You will need to park and walk up to your child's meeting area
- When the teacher sees you, he/she will release your child to you. It is important that the teachers see all grown ups before releasing the children. Please do not sit in your car and honk for the teacher to send the child to you. That becomes a safety issue and we all want what is best for our children
- Bus riders will be dismissed with their class and will have a designated place to wait in the upper hallway in single file lines until the buses arrive
- If you are exiting from the parking lot after school, please know that you can only turn right during that busy time. When cars turn left into the heavy traffic, it makes it unsafe for all of us
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the information above.
