Welcome To A Cooler September!
I have had the pleasure of reading to each classroom and have enjoyed getting to know so many new faces, along with friendly waves and warm hugs from familiar faces. Together we read Mae's First Day of School. Feel free to read this to your child, or listen together if your child is feeling worried or nervous about coming to school or going somewhere new.

Appropriate Footwear
Spare Clothing & Spare Mask
It is also a really good idea to send a spare change of clothing in the backpack. Having an extra set of clothes on hand is very helpful. Learning new routines will take time. If a child is on the playground and needs to use the bathroom, it takes time to assist a child back to their classroom bathroom. Please help us by reminding your child to use the bathroom before school and also to remind them to try to use the classroom bathrooms before their class goes to recess each day.
We have had a few mask malfunctions this week. (Learning curve!) If you are able, please send an extra mask in your child's backpack.

Kelso's Choice
School social worker and counselor at Baker Elementary, Alexis Prins, wants to help all students learn how to peacefully and appropriately handle conflict. With the help of Kelso and his Choice Wheel, the students at Baker Elementary will be taught several positive ways to deal with conflicts. At school the students will be taught the difference between big problems and little problems. Students will be reminded they need an adult's help to solve big problems but they can try to solve little problems on their own or with the help of Kelso and Lilly, our friendly frogs!
This school year we want to give students the opportunity to learn how to use their conflict resolution skills at home. We have all experienced difficulties during this time and using Kelso’s Wheel might be a great way to help students manage their emotions, resolve conflicts, be kind, patient, and inclusive to their peers and siblings.
ALL Students Can Now Eat FREE!! PLEASE READ THROUGHLY
ALL BREAKFASTS and LUNCHES are FREE to ALL CHILDREN!!
Great news! ALL students will again be eligible to receive FREE breakfast and FREE lunch from the school cafeteria during the school day! Participation is optional and there is no registration required. This is great news for so many of our families and a great way to come back to school!
Please note that milk-only purchases are NOT included in the FREE meal benefit available to all students. Student lunch accounts will be charged $.60 when milk is purchased individually. Parents are responsible for all purchases their students make to their lunch accounts. Money can be added to student lunch accounts through the Parent Portal using a credit or debit card.
Remember to fill out a Free & Reduced Price Meal Program application! The percentage of students in the WUS District that qualify for the Free & Reduced Price Meal Program is an important reporting tool used by the District to qualify for additional funding from various sources. Due to less households having filled out applications this year, our numbers do not accurately reflect the need in our community. Please help improve the accuracy of our numbers by completing a Free & Reduced Price Meal Program application if you have not already done so this school year.
Electronic application forms can be completed through the Parent Portal (found under the MORE option of the main menu) or paper copies can be obtained through the office. Please contact WUS Food Services if you have any questions or concerns.
