Blue Jay Broadcast
News and Notes from the Hallways of MHS
Coffee talk with Mr. Guzman
Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! It has been a busy summer and the staff has been working hard to prepare for the new school year. This year we’ve welcomed 11 new teachers as well as our returning teachers. We are ready for a new year of learning and sharing ideas.
We welcomed the Class of 2022 with an Open House to meet the Administration, tour their new home and work together on an activity to share ideas and allow for community building. We used this time to help the students transition from middle school to high school and familiar themselves with the school before they joined the rest of the students for the first day.
One of the ideas discussed with the teachers and will be discussed with the students for this year is the 6 Cs. These are attributes that will be stressed throughout the year as we work to develop them in our educational experience.
Character
Citizenship
Collaboration
Communication
Creativity
Critical Thinking
In this Broadcast, I would like to discuss the first of these attributes – Character. For us, this means learning to learn, grit, tenacity, perseverance and resilience; self-regulations, responsibility and integrity.
As our students grow and we prepare them for their future beyond MHS, it’s important that they have a base on which to build. We can use this definition with our 1:1 Chromebook Initiative. This initiative allows the students to take responsibility for technology - to bring it to school and classrooms. They are tasked with keeping the Chromebooks in a safe location so they are not damaged and for utilizing them for educational purposes. As a member of the Middlesex High School community, we want our students to take ownership of their actions, both online and in person. We want our students to understand that the signed agreements indicate that they have reviewed the handbook and understand the expectations placed on them.
Our teachers use technology every day and in many different ways. The use of technology can be seen in demonstrations, student presentations, homework and grading; we encourage the use of technology in all aspects of education. We want our students to be contributing members of a global society and by encouraging them to seek opportunity and providing the appropriate tools; we are preparing them for the responsibilities they will face outside of MHS.

News & Notes
This year we welcomed 11 new teachers! We are excited to have them join the staff and become part of our Blue Jay family.
Remind your students to listen for announcements and check out fliers posted in the hallways if they are interested in joining clubs and activities.
School picture day is coming up on September 18th, please see the attached picture day documents for directions and information.
Student Emergency Information forms were sent out with schedules at the end of the summer. Please be sure that you have reviewed the form and made any corrections. Students need to return this form to their homeroom teachers. These forms are important in the event there is an emergency and we need to contact the family.
A few reminders as we settle in to the new school year:
Students who are leaving early need to bring a note to the Main Office in the morning so that a pass can be provided to them and they can leave class to meet their parent in the office. If a student is walking, driving or being picked up by someone other than a parent, that information will need to be included in the note.
School security continues to be a priority and our Administration works closely with the Middlesex Police Department to ensure we are providing a safe and secure environment for our students and staff. We continue to stress the importance of See Something, Say Something and encourage all students to speak with an adult if they see or hear anything potentially dangerous or harmful.
There is a new bag policy for the home football games that was previously sent out by Dr. Madison in her weekly eBlast. You can view the new policy at https://www.smore.com/m5rxe-mhs-2018-football-new-bag-policy
Community Support
On September 7th, the faculty, staff and students participated in a wear red day on World Duchenne Awareness Day raising funds for Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy - Team Danny.
