Changing the Way We See Literacy
Using Morphology and Etymology in the K-2 classroom
Overview
AUDIENCE: Targeted for ELA Teachers in Grades K-2.
OVERVIEW:
Have you ever looked at the spelling of a word and thought "I don't understand why this word is spelled this way?" Have you ever answered a student's question with "That's an exception to the rule" or "a sight word" or "an oddball" or "a snap word" only to find out that many students still can't remember them to read or spell? What if spelling or understanding these words is more than sound/symbol relationships but instead is related to meaning and connection across groups. or FAMILIES, of words.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
In this 3-hour session, K-2 teachers will walk away with a new understanding of the English writing system and how it impacts our youngest readers and writers.
~Teachers will leave with tangible lessons on understanding of “sight words”, word structures, and how these relate to phoneme/grapheme correspondences to start immediately in their classrooms.
~They will have an updated outlook on where English has come from and what it truly means to be literate.
~Teachers will also receive a resource card deck (Valued at $10) to help them in referencing to some “sight words” that frustrate teachers and students alike.
