Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding, and Independence for All Learners
This mini workshop has been designed based on Ron Ritchhart's book - Making Thinking Visible.
Session Objectives
- Define and discuss visible thinking and how it can impact student understanding
- Explore, discuss, utilize iPad apps that will make students thinking visible
- Demonstrate and explore the use of Thinking Routines in the classroom
- Identify opportunities to embed visible thinking apps and thinking routines into the classroom
Activity 1 - What do we know (and want to know) about visible thinking? 10 minutes
- Reflect for a few minutes.
- Then go to our class padlet to share your ideas and questions.
Part 2 - Take a screenshot of our Padlet
Part 3 - Discuss potential curricular ideas for using concept mapping. Share on our Google doc.
Thinking Routine - Think Wonder Puzzle (without the puzzle)
Activity 2 - Just think about it! 15 Minutes

Activity 3 - Reading and annotating texts in Notability - 15 Minutes
Part 2 - Highlight text on page 1 and 2 (Why teach for understanding AND What is understanding) that relates to the 4 C's.
Part 3 - Add a sticky note that answers at least 1 of the questions from the 4 C's.
Part 4 -Take a screenshot of your work
Part 5: Discuss with your group your findings AND/OR ways you can implement Notability to make thinking visible - Share ideas on our Google doc.
Advanced -Add pictures, websites, audio

Activity 4 - Google Docs - 15 Minutes
Need 6 groups.
- Open Making Thinking Visible via Google Doc app
- Read your number and reflect on a meaning of the content.
- In your group, select (and highlight) 1 phrase/word your group found most important.
- Then and find 1 symbol or image that represent what the text means and add it to the doc. (under your paragraph)
- Be ready to share reasoning with with full group
- Take a screenshot of your work!
- Discuss with your group your findings AND/OR ways you can implement Google Docs to make thinking visible - Share ideas on our Google doc.
Activity 5 - Skitch 10 Minutes
- Review the map of understanding.
- Take a photo of any item and open it with Skitch.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the above characteristics by annotating your picture. Feel free to use text, write on it, ect.
- Take a screenshot of your picture!
- Discuss with your group your findings AND/OR ways you can implement Skitch to make thinking visible - Share ideas on our Google doc.
Activity 6 - Creating a collage with Pic Collage - 10 minutes
- Compare and contrast a historical event OR current event with at least 4 pictures using Pic collage
- Must be real photos.
- Take a screenshot of your picture!
- Share your collage to our Padlet
- Discuss with your group your findings AND/OR ways you can implement Pic Collage to make thinking visible - Share ideas on our Google doc.
Advanced - Add a layer of AWESOME by opening your saved collage into Thinglink. Add video of you asking questions and thinking about the topic. Check out the Question Starts routine.
Activity 8 - In their shoes - 20 minutes
- Create a short story using any one of the story telling apps (Chatterpix, Tellagami, Sock Puppets, 30 hands, Adobe Voice) in which you take the voice of your character. Observe what is happening, how does this make you think? Feel?
- Take a screenshot of your product
- Reflect on this activity and your thinking in creating your story. What did you like? What were the challenges? As your character - what are you questioning?
- Discuss with your group your findings AND/OR ways you can implement Story Telling apps to make thinking visible - Share ideas on our Google doc.

Activity 9 - Thinking about your thinking
- Review our Google Doc and the screenshots of your artifacts you created today.
- Select 2 you would like to implement in your classroom and how you plan to use them. Select an app (whiteboard app - or any others) to share your ideas.
- Share with group/whole group.
