It's time to start collecting books, DVDs, and CDs for OUUC's November 5 Books, Brownies & Beans used book sale. (Please note directions on what/when/where for donations here.) This year, proceeds will benefit Pizza Klatch, The Kids Backpacks Food Program, and Thurston Climate Action Team.

Book sorting starts Sunday, September,18, and LOTS of volunteers are needed - especially co-chairs and a volunteer coordinator. Join us in reading the UU Common Read: Defund Fear by Zach Norris. This fascinating book explores our current punitive system of safety and what the possibilities are for a more just, loving, and also safe way of being together.

There will be a one-session workshop on the book on Thursday, October 6, 6:30 pm, and a Study/Action Circle will form around the book following that workshop.

We have ordered 10 copies of the book that can be obtained by talking to Rev Sara, or you can find it at your favorite bookseller or library. Register here.

How can you know when there is an action coming up for faith in action? How do we organize in response to emerging justice issues and needs?

We’re forming a Faith in Action Alert List in Realm, as an opt-in group for FIA announcements. Join this group if you want to get these alerts. Contact the church office to sign up.

Study/Action Circle to study Isabel Wilkerson's book CASTE

– Diana Finch and Don Melnick will co-facilitate

– Our one-hour organizational meeting will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 15 on the OUUC Memorial Patio

– At that time we will:

+ agree on how frequently we’ll meet and how we’ll conduct study circle meetings

+ prepare a “draft covenant” for how we want to be together

+ discuss questions

– We’ll forward study materials on covenanting in advance of this meeting

Blessing of the Backpacks, Sunday, September 11 at 11:30 am - Students of all ages are invited to attend a Blessing the Backpacks ritual to mark their return to school on September 11 (after the water communion service). Bring your backpack, book bag, briefcase, etc. to be blessed and to receive a bag charm.

All Young Adults (ages 18-35) are invited to the young adult group each 3rd Thursday at 6:30 (following the Thurs community dinner).

This class is required for those who would like to become members of OUUC and recommended for anyone who would like to better understand Unitarian Universalism and the way this particular congregation is structured and behaves. There are three class sessions, with pre-work to review before the class so the class itself is mostly discussion and time for you to ask your questions.

Many hands make the work lighter! Join the fun and camaraderie with the OUUC community at an "After Work" work party Friday, September 9 at 6:00 pm. We'll be cleaning up the building area and finishing up some landscaping chores. Families welcome!

The OUUC Blue Apron Team invites you join the team and twice a month provide a main or side dish for dinner at the Unity Commons Shelter. This month’s “dinner dates” are Wednesday, September 21, and Wednesday, September 28.

The Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation was one of the founding faith communities for Camp Quixote. Many of you who were at OUUC in the early 2010s helped shelter, feed, and care for vulnerable community members in the church parking lot. Since then, Quixote Villages has provided tiny homes to more than 100 people.
