Westlake PTSA - Nominations for 2014-2015 Executive Board
Dear Westlake Families and Staff:
On behalf of the Westlake PTSA Nominating Committee, I am sending this email to all Westlake families regarding the upcoming PTSA elections for the 2014-15 school year. The PTSA has four positions for which we will hold elections: 1) President; 2) Vice President; 3) Secretary; and 4) Treasurer.
This message includes information regarding the PTSA nomination process, including duties for each office and the current goals and objectives for the PTSA.
PTSA is intended to represent all families. As such, it is important to the Nominating Committee that all families have an opportunity to participate in the election process.
Our Nominating Committee will be leading the following nomination process:
1) Step One – Announcement to the Community
April 4, 2014 – Email sent and information posted on school website inviting all families of WHS students to nominate an individual or self-nominate for one of the positions on the Executive Board.
- Step Two – Receive Nominations
From April 4 – April 15, 2014, nominations will be received via email by Tracee Paden, front office secretary at Westlake – padenth@fultonschools.org Each nominee who is self-nominating must submit a resume and letter of interest. If you wish to nominate another Westlake parent, please submit the person’s name, email address, and phone number so we can contact that person to inform them of your nomination and the requirements to accept such nomination for consideration by the Nominating Committee. Note – all nominees must be members of the Westlake PTSA during the 2013-14 school year. If you are interested and have not yet joined, please contact Ms. Paden for a PTSA application. Deadline to receive all documentation – April 15 at 4:00 p.m. - Step Three – Interviews
All nominees who submit the required resume and letter of interest will be interviewed by the Nominating Committee during the week of April 15. - Step Four – Nominating Committee Presents Slate of Officers
The Nominating Committee will nominate one person for each PTSA position. This slate will be posted on the school website and in the front office for the required 10 days (April 21, 2014). - Step Five – PTSA Election
The current PTSA President will conduct the formal election at our regularly scheduled PTSA meeting on April 30. At this time, the slate will be presented by the Nominating Committee and additional nominations will be accepted from the floor.
Requirements for Nominees:
- Be a current PTSA member.
- Submit letter of interest and resume to Tracee Paden by 4:00 p.m. on April 15, 2014.
In an effort to better prepare a potential nominee for the duties and responsibilities, I have provided a description of each office (per the Georgia PTA).

Mercer Pharmacy Scholars Summer Program - April 30 Application Deadline
We will be holding our fourth annual Pharmacy Scholars Summer Program on our Atlanta Campus July 8 – 10, 2014. This program offers an opportunity for high school students with interest in pharmacy to learn more about the profession and the educational and professional steps they should take to become pharmacist.
Students must be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors (for 2014-2015), have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.00 (verified by guidance counselor/school administrator), and have an interest in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Each student applying to the program should submit to us a completed application form and arrange to have your office submit a completed verification form to us. Copies of the application and verification forms are also available on our website: http://pharmacy.mercer.edu/admissions/pharmacyscholars.cfm.
The application deadline is April 30, 2014.

Georgia PTA Scholarship - Deadline Extended until April 25, 2014
This message is being sent on behalf of Sophronia Qualls, Georgia PTA Scholarship Specialist:
We are extremely pleased with the overwhelming amount of responses that we have received from our outstanding senior students. To date, we have received many applications. Scheduling for Spring break for school districts vary. Many of the districts are out this week this for Spring break. After careful thought, we have decided to extend the deadline date up to and including Friday, April 25, 2014. Applications must be post-marked by no later than April 25. With the cost of college tuition steadily rising, it is the hearfelt desire of Georgia PTA to provide all seniors that desire to attend college with as much support as we possibly can. After all, we strive to make every child's potential a reality! We wish all of our aspiring college students much success!

Summer Employment Opportunity for Students
Summer Employment Opportunities General Requirements for Youth:
§ Youth must be between ages 16 through 21;
§ A low-income individual (see below)
§ Be a citizen or non-citizen authorized to work in the U.S.;
§ Meet Military Selective Service registration requirements (males only); and
§ Be a Fulton County Resident;
§ Within one or more of the following categories:
(A) Individuals who are school dropouts.
(B) Individuals who are basic literacy deficient.
(C) Individuals with educational attainment that is one or more grade levels below the grade level appropriate to the age of the individuals.
(D) Individuals who are pregnant or parenting.
(E) Individuals with disabilities, including learning disabilities.
(F) Individuals who are homeless or runaway youth.
(G) Individuals who are offenders.
(H) *Other eligible youth who face serious barriers to employment as identified by the local board
(I) Foster care youth.
Note: Male youth who turn 18 while enrolled in WIA must complete their military selective service registration 30 days prior to or 30 days after their 18th birthday to continue receiving WIA services. Failure to comply with Selective Service Registration requirement will results in immediate dismal from all WIA program and services.

Regents Hike Tuition at Georgia Universities and Colleges (Online News Article)
For the third year in a row, the majority of students in the University System of Georgia will face a 2.5 percent tuition hike in the 2014-2015 academic year. Georgia regents decided on the raise this afternoon at at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega during a monthly meeting.
