Principal's Message
Parents and Community Stakeholders,
March has flown by! It was a very festive month both in and out of school. Our PTA was able to take advantage at the Church Hill Irish Festival and raised over $1,000 dollars which will be contributed to upgrading the upper-grade playground. Our Chimborazo Annual Family Basketball game was also a great fund raiser and opportunity for our Chimborazo community to get together as a family. The month also included visitors from Philadelphia for a Hip-hop math assembly, multiple Blue Sky field trips, Read Across America events and visitors, and the kick-off for our One School One Book! Thank you to everyone that contributed to the success of these events.
Academically, we are about to begin the last quarter of the school year. Students should be exhibiting academic skills that indicate they are ready for the next grade level. Our students in grade 3 through 5 will continue to prepare for their state-wide tests that begin in May. Parents with students in these grad levels, please be sure to mark your calendars and be at SOL night, April 20th, to discuss what the test will look like and leave with resources you can use at home to support your child’s success. All students should be working on IReady for reading and math to develop skills in those areas. 5th grade Science and 4th grade Virginia Studies are also available for students on Study Island’s website. Teachers are remediating in small groups, in all grade levels, for students who are not showing mastery on their unit assessments to ensure our students exhibit grade level skills.
As always, we are always looking for volunteers to help support our students and teachers. If you have time, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school so we can help facilitate this. There have been many additions this year, and plans for additional resources for our students will continue to be added to ensure our students and teachers have the tools they need to succeed. The school recently purchased several thousand dollars worth of math manipulatives so the concepts the students are learning are concrete!
Thank you for your cooperation and, as always, thank you for your valued support and contributions to making Chimborazo a world-class school!
Respectfully,
David T. Peck

Attendance matters
Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
Box Tops
Look for the 10¢ Box Tops coupon on hundreds of your favorite products -- Cheerios, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Ziploc, Kleenex, Hefty, and many more.
Cut out the coupons and ask your child to give them to their teacher. The more coupons you send in, the more money our school receives!

The power of "YET"
Some of you may have read about growth versus fixed mindset. A fixed mindset asserts that we are born with a given set of abilities and aptitude and that these cannot change over time. We want our students to embrace a growth mindset. The video, through class dojo, illustrates this concept. When a concept is hard or we encounter a challenge, it is imperative to not give up and develop the skills and abilities to overcome these challenges. Parents and students alike, when we are faced with a challenge, tell yourself," I may not be able to do this YET." Using YET is a powerful way to illustrate, even though we may not be where we want to be at the current moment, we can get there with the right attitude and work ethic. Use the power of YET and embrace a growth mindset!
