NEWS FROM THE NEST

A Message from Principal Palmer
Welcome back! It was a pleasure to open the JVES doors this past August 27th to the smiling faces of 745 students. Unlike previous years, we did not experience an earthquake, hurricane, or flooding during the first week of school. We were even lucky with the temperature! We enjoyed a most successful opening thanks to the cooperation of all students, parents, and staff. The students did a fine job transitioning to their new grade levels and teachers worked diligently to create Student-centered classrooms and get to know their students.
In addition to extending a “Welcome!” to our new families, please be sure to welcome eight new staff members and three long-term substitutes to JVES: Ms. Lois Bucci, kindergarten; Ms. Anna Baker, art; Ms. Theresa Iacarino, vocal music; Ms. Kelly Panuska, grade one/two classroom teacher; Ms. Lori Gallup, school psychologist; Ms. Kelly Wagner, speech/language pathologist; Ms. Kayla Street, Office Secretary; Ms. Robyn Morris, Additional Adult Support; Ms. Brandy Schappell, STAT teacher long-term substitute; Ms. Megan Baker, grade one long-term substitute; and, Ms. Deborah Persinger, ESOL long-term substitute. These faculty members are great additions to our JVES staff and community!
Joppa View Elementary has enjoyed much success over the years due to the talented teaching staff, motivated students, and supportive families. I encourage all members of the school community to support the PTA by becoming a member, participating in the many school and evening events planned for the 2014-2015 school year, and supporting all fundraisers. I appreciate the many hours our PTA volunteers give for the benefit of the JVES students.
In closing, Ms. Flanigan and I look forward to working with all students, parents, and families to ensure that your child has a very successful school year. We encourage you to become involved as we strive to provide the best educational experience possible in a safe and nurturing environment.

A Few Reminders:
The school building is open to students at 9:00 a.m. Unless you have registered your child for Open Door, unsupervised students are not permitted on the property prior to 9:00 a.m. The late bell rings at 9:15 a.m. At that time, all students are to be seated in their classroom and ready for morning announcements. If your child arrives after 9:15 a.m., please park and visit the main office to sign your student in. Dismissal will be at 3:35 p.m. for car riders and 3:40 p.m. for bus riders. All students who are car riders will exit their classrooms when called and report to the lobby to line up for dismissal. These students will then be escorted outside to the arrival/dismissal loop by a staff member. Each student will be released to his/her car after the car pulls forward and comes to a complete stop. Drivers in the carpool line may not park or leave their cars in the line. Car riders who are not picked up from school by 4:00 p.m. will go directly to the office and we will begin calling emergency pick-up numbers. For additional information about car rider procedures, please see the Joppa View Elementary Parent/Student Handbook (grades k, 1, and 2), student planners (grades 3, 4, and 5) and/or the JVES website (http://joppaviewes.bcps.org). Please be considerate of those staff members on Car Rider duty and understand that the enforcement of this policy is to ensure the safety of our children.
To alleviate lengthy carpool lines and students being late for school, we urge parents to utilize the provided bus transportation for students. It is helpful if all eligible students ride the bus, especially during the first few weeks of school, in order to help the drivers become familiar with stops and students, and develop a consistent, timely route more quickly.
PLEASE, for the safety of the children, NO CARS MAY ENTER THE BUS LOOP DURING STUDENT ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL. Please be considerate of those staff members on bus duty and understand that the enforcement of this policy is to ensure the safety of our children. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. These procedures have been developed to alleviate congestion and promote a safe and organized arrival and dismissal. We appreciate your cooperation.
Please be aware that cars may not make a left on Honeygo Boulevard from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. or from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This information is displayed on a traffic sign provided by the Baltimore County Traffic Division at the exit of the school. Also, cars are not permitted to make a left turn on Dove Drive or a U-turn at this intersection from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This information is displayed on a traffic sign provided by the Baltimore County Traffic Division at this intersection. Traffic citations may be written by the Baltimore County Police Department if you are observed in violation of these directions.
The Fish and Game Commission asks that visitors to the building not park anywhere in their driveway. They have graciously agreed to allow visitors to travel down their driveway and park to the right side of their parking lot. Please be mindful of this request. We want to be good neighbors!

Attendance Kiosks
BCPS One-card Key Fobs
During the week of 10/6/14-10/10/14, all kindergarten through grade three students will have a one-card key fob attached to their backpack. This key fob will be utilized to record initial student attendance upon arrival to school. ABC2 Introduces Teachers are Heroes Program
ABC2 introduces Teachers are Heroes, a 10-month program highlighting one K-8 Maryland school teacher each month who has gone above and beyond his or her job description and instilled a lifelong love for learning in Maryland students. The program will begin in August 2014 and run through June 2015.
ABC2, in partnership with MECU - Baltimore’s Credit Union, will award the monthly selected teachers a $250 check to use toward classroom supplies along with a plaque acknowledging their achievement. A reception will be held at the ABC2 studio at the end of the year for all recipients and their families, and the winners will be highlighted on ABC2 News throughout the school year.
Students and parents are encouraged to nominate deserving teachers through ABC2’s website at www.abc2news.com/teachersareheroes. The program will be promoted on ABC2 for the duration of the program, and monthly winners will be selected by a panel comprised of station representatives who will read through the nominations and choose winning entries based on merit and outstanding dedication to the teaching profession.
