Claxton's 3rd Annual Bee Day - Tuesday, April 24th

Claxton is gearing up for its 3rd annual celebration of Bee Day which will be tomorrow Tuesday April 24th. It promises to be a fun and learning-filled day! All students will visit the media center to interact with bee-related Makey-Makey circuit board projects, learn from our 5th grade science students as they present the findings of their research on pollinators, enjoy the unveiling of Claxton’s newly-beautified beehive garden, enjoy kindergarten bee-themed poetry performances, and meet beekeepers from Buncombe County Beekeepers Association. Special thanks to Home Depot for generously donating supplies for our garden beautification project!

**All students and staff are invited to come to school dressed in their best black and yellow to celebrate our honeybee friends.

*****Students will be invited to sample honey brought in by our beekeepers. Please let your child’s teacher know if you do not want your child to taste any honey.

Mix It Up at Lunch Day - Tues, April 24th

Our next Mix It Up at Lunch Day is tomorrow, Tuesday, April 24! We'd love to have you at Claxton during lunch to help facilitate conversations and to mix it up! Contact Claxton Counselor Mark Ackerman, mark.ackerman@acsgmail.net, if you would like to help.

Take A Stand Against Racism Day

K-5 classes will participate in mini lessons throughout this week and come together in a whole school activity on Friday, April 27th. Wear ORANGE! This event is sponsored by the Claxton Social Justice League.

Volunteers Needed to Serve as EOG Proctors

Claxton needs volunteers to proctor the North Carolina "End of Grade" (or EOG) tests. Test dates are May 30, May 31, and June 1. We would love for you to volunteer ALL or SOME of these dates. Tests start at 8:00 a.m. and end around lunch time. Parents from any grade level can volunteer.

In order to proctor, you'll need to attend a proctor training. To volunteer, please click this link and select your training date! You will also need to have had a background check through Asheville City Schools. See article below for more information if you haven't already had an ACS background check.

Volunteer Background Checks for Asheville City Schools

As a volunteer, you are an important part of the school community. When you become a volunteer, your work takes on special significance -- though you are not part of the staff, you share the same responsibilities that paid staff are held to while engaged with students. We are THANKFUL for all of our volunteers! Please click on the link below to complete a background check. This background check is required for anyone who may work in the classroom, serve as reading and math tutors, extracurricular coaches, mentors, and overnight field trip chaperones. It only takes a couple of minutes to fill out the information, and once it is returned (usually within a week), you are all set to go.

Classroom Volunteer Opportunities

Claxton has several current needs for one-on-one and small group volunteers in the classroom setting. One of these opportunities focuses on helping 2nd grade students with reading fluency work, and another opening is being paired to work one-on-one with kids in their grade level classrooms during various learning times. Please contact Miriam Scott, Claxton Volunteer Coordinator, at miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you are interested in helping us meet these needs.

Thank you for a fantastic CLX Career Day! See our Facebook page for additional photos!

Drum-Making Residency with 5th Grade

Thanks to funding from our Claxton PTO, 5th graders worked with musician and artist Steven Turner of Giving Tree Music to build their own drums in a four day residency this past week. At the end of the residency, each student has an ashiko drum to keep as a lasting memento of their time making music and art at Claxton. The students sanded and decorated the pre-made bodies of the drums, tie-dyed, stretched and attached the heads, and played their new instruments in a small performance on the afternoon of Friday, April 20th.

Congrats to CLX 2nd graders for an AWESOME Sound School Performance at the Orange Peel!

1st Grade Field Trip to the Minerals Lab

Claxton's 1st grade had a blast and learned SO much on their recent mineral lab field trip. They learned rocks are found in many of the foods we eat daily. (One of the students' favorite things was learning that phosphate comes from fossilized poop.) They saw shark teeth that are 20 million years old, and they were able to watch rocks as they were first crushed into sand and then separated into different minerals by using a water slide.

Bess the Book Bus Visits Claxton!

On Tuesday April 17th, Claxton kindergartners had a very special visit from Tampa-based mobile literacy outreach effort, Bess the Book Bus, whose exemplary goal is to spread the love of reading in communities all over the country. Jennifer Frances has run Bess the Book Bus for over a decade, reading to kids and giving books away. Students met with Jen in the media center for a great read-aloud that had them all laughing and participating. Afterwards, the kids got to board the bus and pick out a brand new book of their very own! We're so grateful to Bess the Book Bus for making a stop at Claxton! Additional photos from Bess the Book Bus' visit can be seen on Claxton Elementary's Facebook page.
