Summer Street Beat

October 15, 2021

Dear Summer Street & Lynnfield Preschool Families,

As I am settling into the town of Lynnfield, Summer Street School, and Lynnfield Preschool, I am finding there is so much to learn! Thankfully, I am surrounded by incredibly kind and talented staff, who are generously giving so much of their time to share routines, traditions, and norms. I am truly grateful to be here, and have them as my colleagues! There are a few more pieces that I have learned about over the last week that I wanted to share out with you all, so I thought I would send out another newsletter this month.

Please read on for important information and updates.

In partnership,

Karen Cronin

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Just a reminder!

This fall's conferences are scheduled for November 9th and November 18th. Conferences are 20 minutes long (preschool conferences last 15 minutes), and you can sign up using the link below. Remember to please put your child's name in the time slot, and your name in the comments. This link will stay active until November 1st. Should you need to make a change after the sign-up is closed, you can contact Ms. Gustafson at

Staffing at Summer Street

We have hired a school psychologist for Summer Street School. Ms. Krista Rumschlag will be joining our staff at the end of October. She most recently was the school psychologist at the school from which I came in Tewksbury; I can attest to the depth of her professional knowledge, skill in connecting with students in genuine, meaningful ways, and commitment to the creation of strong partnerships with families. I feel confident that she will be a great addition to a strong staff!

In addition, the district is still looking for daily substitutes! If you are interested, or know somehow who might be, please read out to Ms. Linda Call at

Halloween Parade at SSS

As you have read from the PTO email, the Halloween Parade is back again at Summer Street School! Families are welcome to join the fun by arriving at the back field by 9:00 AM on Friday, 10/29. The parking lot will be closed, so please plan to park on the nearby streets. In case of inclement weather, the parade will be held indoors, and due to physical distancing and safety concerns, families will not be invited into the building. Let's hope for good weather!

I am also aware that not all families celebrate this holiday. If this is the case for your family, I want to partner with you to ensure that you and your student(s) feel comfortable and included on this day. Please reach out to me directly so that we can plan together.

For those that are participating, please remember these important guidelines:

  • Children should bring their costumes to school (rather than wearing it) in a clearly labeled bag. They will have time to change in their classrooms. These costumes should be easy for your child to put on, take off, and put away independently.
  • Thank you for leaving toy weapons and sharp objects at home.
  • Students should be able to see and move around easily while wearing their costume.
  • Safe shoes are a must!

Halloween Parade at Lynnfield Preschool

Our youngest learners will also join in the fun on October 29th! Both AM and PM classes will enjoy parading inside the PreK playground in their costumes. As with the older students, please follow the guidelines to ensure a successful day for all:

  • Children should bring their costumes to school (rather than wearing it) in a clearly labeled bag. They will have time to change in their classrooms.
  • Simple costumes are best! Staff will help all children put their costumes on, and appreciate a more basic costume.
  • Thank you for leaving toy weapons and additional objects at home.
  • Students should be able to see and move around easily while wearing their costume.
  • Safe shoes are a must!

The morning classes will begin their parade at 11:35, and the afternoon classes will begin their parade at 3:00. Students will be dismissed directly from the playground.

Morning Preschool Arrival Routine

The good weather we have been blessed with this month is wonderful, and it is natural to want to be outside to enjoy it right before the preschool day begins. As much as I love the sound of children playing and adults connecting with one another, it has become a distraction for our other Summer Street leaners, who are in classrooms right by the parking lot/preschool arrival area.

We need your help to ensure a safe, efficient, and non-disruptive arrival for our 8:45 classes. Please remember:

  • Drop-off begins at 8:45 am and ends promptly at 8:50 am at the side door marked “Lynnfield Preschool.” Please pull up as far as you can within the drop-off line, which is in the back of the school. (This area starts at the stop sign, goes around the loop closest to the “Lynnfield Preschool” sign on the back entrance, and extends into the parking lot as a line forms.) Once you have pulled your car up in the drop-off loop, please put your car in park.
  • Please stay in your car until the preschool teachers arrive. Then, for those families that are parked along the side of the building, exiting the car can begin. Staff will escort the children into the building. If your car is not in the loop, and still in the parking lot, please wait until you have pulled along the side of the building to unload your child.
  • Make sure your name tag is visible on the visor of the passenger side, as that helps the staff shepherd the children quickly to the right teacher.
  • If you arrive later than 8:50 am and all staff members are in the classroom, you MUST report to the Summer Street School front office to check-in.

I appreciate your cooperation with this routine!

Used Book Fair

Another return of a favorite - the Used Book Fair is coming back! This is a great opportunity for students to increase their personal library for a nominal cost. The first book is free, and each additional book is $1.00. Students should bring their book fair money in a Ziploc bag, clearly marked with their name and teacher’s name. The profits from the Used Book Fair will be used to purchase new books and makerspace materials for the Media Center, but there is never an obligation to buy. Be on the lookout next week for more information. The Used Book Fair will be held on 10/26 in the Media Center.
