The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of April 13 - 17!
Message from the principal
UHS Families, Students, and Staff,
We are excited to begin a new chapter as Urbandale High School this week! To help share a special message with students and families about how much we miss them and about how important new learning is (even if it isn't for a formal grade), members of the UHS Leadership Team worked with members of the UHS staff to create this special video. Please take a few minutes to watch it and help see that connection. :) A special "shout out" to Mrs. Bunce, Mrs. Borell, Mrs. Mohling, Mrs. Maggart, and Mrs. Wilson, for helping put this together and then to all UHS staff who participated!!
Up to this point, we have provided a variety of optional learning resources and teachers have emailed students with regards general learning opportunities. Starting tomorrow, students will begin receiving emails from each of their teachers between 7:30am-9:30am that focus on more specific learning targets and optional learning opportunities for this for each week (between April 13th and April 30th).
One key difference with these new learning opportunities is that for each UHS course, teachers have worked with their teacher teams to identify the most essential learning standards to focus on so that students can maximize their learning. This way, students will be getting the most they can out of the limited time (roughly 20 minutes per day per class) we have between April 13th and April 30th.
Though this learning is optional, teachers will be able to give students feedback on their learning. In accordance with department of education guidance during continuous learning in the VEEO system, one difference will be that this feedback will not come in the form of a traditional grade or score that would normally be recorded in PowerSchool. This learning will not count toward students' grades or credit for the class. However, the learning will be new and is important.
Like other institutions around Iowa and around the country, this is a new endeavor for us as teachers and students. With that, we will have things that go well and other things that need to be adjusted. We will all be learning together in this new approach. We will all have to give each other grace and understanding as we learn and make improvements.
It is important to note that students and teachers can and should continue to work on making up work and learning from March 12th and before that during this time as well.
Please know that we are considering things like credit attainment, progress toward graduation, final grades/grading of student learning, semester finals, etc. as we navigate our plans if it ends up that our school closure goes beyond April 30th.
I am reaching out again to connect on a few things. Some that I shared last week and some other updates:
- The well-being of our students and staff: Please know that we have been reaching out and responding to staff and community questions as soon as we can in the best way we can. Families and get meals for students 18 and younger can get Grab'n'Go meals from six different UCSD sites. Free. No id needed. Families can now pick up meals for students (see details below).
- EFR support- During these challenging times (and all times), please know that EFR (Employee and Family Resources) is available as a great personal resource via phone and the web. I've copied information below that I received today. This is free to any UCSD staff, students, or families.

- Student learning during closure -
Our district, as with other K-12 public districts around the state, are working closely with the Iowa Department of Education as well as Area Education Agencies to be sure we are following federal and state requirements and guidelines regarding student learning during this time period. It is important to note that equity and access are significant factors that come into play as we consider learning for all of our students. With that, we will be moving forward with the VEEO option that Mr. Bass has shared about in communication this past week.
- Teacher emails and communications students- It was great to see so many positive, uplifting, and informative messages from our teachers to students this past week. Look for updated emails coming from teachers in the coming weeks. Teachers will send an email out on Monday mornings between 7:30am-9:30am their plan for learning for the week. Students and families needing technology like Chromebooks to aid in students learning were able to pick those up this past week at UHS. If you are still in need of technology, please let me know.
- Working on past work- Students are encouraged to work on any past work or learning that was assigned prior to spring break if they are able to do so. Again, we recognize that not all families have internet access, but we are working on solutions for this. This can and should be a focus for us moving forward.
- Grades, credits, and finals- New learning over the time we are in VEEO April 13-30 will not count toward grades. If we learn that school closure will extend beyond April 30th, we will be providing additional information specific to final grades and semester finals. As it is now, we are set to reopen school on May 1st, and at that time, we would be able to count that new learning (between May 1st and the end of the year) toward a student final grade in a course.
- DMACC courses (including DMACC on campus Career Academy courses and concurrent enrollment DMACC courses taught at UHS)- We have worked with DMACC to develop a plan for how our students can earn the college credit for their DMACC courses. DMACC has worked with us to be sure students are able to achieve learning competencies and earn college credit. We shared more details on Friday, April 10th (see below) with regards to required student learning in these UHS dual credit classes. Teachers of these courses continue to work on and share more details about these plans based on guidance we received. It is an important difference to note that these UHS DMACC dual credit classes are requiring new learning and grading new learning of students.
- Prom, Post prom, and Graduation updates- Porm and post prom have been cancelled (see more details below). Graduation plans are still on track to happen on May 27th though we are looking at potential other options if local, state, or federal guidance, indicate we need to make changes.
Please reach out with any concerns and/or questions you may have. As I shared before, these are unique and challenging times, and we will work through them together and support each other to ensure the well-being of all. #UHSpride
Sincerely,
Tim Carver

IMPORTANT UPDATE on APRIL 12th regarding UHS Prom, Post Prom, and Graduation
Graduation is another significant event that we look forward to celebrating with our seniors each year. This has been something that I have been thinking about along with other district leaders, and I'm sure, many of you. With this event scheduled now for May 27th and that date being further out, we have not made a formal decision on this yet. We are continuing to look at different options and formats in the event we are not able to meet so that we can honor and hold up our seniors as they receive their diplomas, making it the special day that it is. Please look for more information to come on regarding graduation ceremony details and events like the senior picnic.
Last week, we have worked with Marc Havnen, our Herff Jones rep, to have curb-side pick up of the graduation announcements and other materials (NOT CAP AND GOWNS) that they had ordered. It was a successful event! The cap and gown delivery/hand out will not happen until some time in May (currently scheduled for May 22nd).
Another very important item he'd like to highlight is the fact that there are still seniors who haven't ordered their cap and gown yet. It is imperative they do so right away (if they'd like) to ensure he can provide a unit in time for graduation. Here's the direct website they should use to order...
https://highschool.herffjones.com/secom/school/IA/URBANDALE+HIGH+SCHOOL/14008550000/1333/home
To help families during this difficult time and to encourage them to act right away, Marc has removed the $10 handling fee from now until April 15th.
As you can appreciate, we don't make any of these decisions lightly and will continue to keep the best interests of our students, families, staff, and community, in the forefront of our decision making as we move forward through these unprecedented times. Please know that we will communicate decisions made as soon as we can. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Tim Carver

Information for UHS students enrolled in DMACC dual credit/concurrent enrollment classes from April 10th
An email sent on Friday, April 10th, to students and families of students in UHS DMACC dual credit courses:
Families of UHS students enrolled in UHS DMACC dual credit/concurrent enrollment classes:
As we move into new learning next week starting April 13th under the VEEO plan that Mr. Bass has shared, I wanted to let you know about a significant distinction with regards to new learning as it relates to our DMACC dual credit class that your student is enrolled in at UHS. I have linked a list to those UHS DMACC dual credit classes here. Whereas new learning in regular high school classes is voluntary, the new learning for UHS DMACC dual credit classes is required as students are working toward college credit.
Since these classes align to college credit, we are able to require new learning. This means new learning in these classes, starting on Monday, April 13th, is NOT voluntary. This reflects updated guidance we received from the Iowa Department of Education since my last email on March 27. The Iowa Department of Education shared that with the VEEO option of learning, college dual credit classes can require new learning. This work and learning can be graded and included in a student’s grade. UHS teachers who are teaching these DMACC dual credit classes are taking into account this unique learning environment, and they are adjusting the amount of assignments and learning. This will allow students to meet the necessary competencies for DMACC in order to earn college credit in a way that is responsive to the uniqueness and challenges of our current situation.
As we indicated before, we are working closely with DMACC and UHS instructors to be sure that UHS dual credit/concurrent enrollment classes continue to provide the option of earning college credit even with this time of school closure, ensuring that class competencies are met for each given course.
On Friday, March 27th, DMACC provided additional guidance regarding options for students in our dual credit/concurrent enrollment classes. These two options are:
At the end of the semester, students may elect to choose a letter grade OR a pass/fail option.
The deadline for a student to drop a DMACC class without penalty was extended to April 15th.
Below is an email from Jen Rathje, Career Advantage Specialist at DMACC, to high school principals about those options. At this point, they do not have the form for the drop option available but will share it as soon as they do.
If you have questions, please contact me.
Thank you,
Tim Carver

Email from Jen Rathje at DMACC from March 27:
Principals,
The DMACC Leadership Council recognizes the impact of COVID-19 on the spring 2020 semester, therefore, for all spring 2020 term classes in session after March 13, DMACC students will have the option to accept an assigned letter grade OR to submit a request for pass/fail (P/F) grading. Please forward this communication to your high school faculty, school counselors and students enrolled in a DMACC concurrent enrollment course.
Here’s how this will work:
· Faculty will grade students as usual and submit a letter grade (A-F, or I) to the Registrar's Office, according to the grading scale outlined in their course syllabus.
o Passing grade=Letter grade of C- or higher.
o Failing grade=Letter grade of D+ or lower.
· Students will choose to receive either the letter grade recorded by the instructor or a P/F designation by submitting an online form through the DMACC Registrar’s Office. If no form is submitted, the letter grade will be recorded for the course.
o This decision must be made between May 14 and May 20, 2020 for On-Campus Course Option (OCCO), Online Career Academy (OLCA) and Career Academy courses.
o This decision must be made between June 12 and June 19, 2020 for concurrent enrollment courses offered in the high school.
· Courses taken with P/F grading may count towards curricular, academic program, academic progress and graduation requirements. Students in certain Career and Technical programs may want to confer with an academic advisor, navigator, or their program chair to ensure a P/F course will meet a required prerequisite or graduation requirement.
· Students should not elect P/F grades in cases when a course is needed to meet a prerequisite requiring a grade of C or better.
· Extended Drop Deadline:
o For standard 16-week courses scheduled to meet from January through May 2020, the drop deadline has been extended to Wednesday, April 15. This applies to OCCO, OLCA and Career Academy courses.
o For standard full-term concurrent enrollment courses offered in the high school, the drop deadline has been extended to May 1st. Student drops still need to be initiated through your high school counseling office.
Of note, DMACC will include a designation on all student transcripts indicating the extraordinary circumstances encountered in the 2020 spring semester.
Students should consult with their Career Advantage Academic Advisor about these possibilities and whether they may be a good option for their coursework this semester. Please note if your students plan to enter a specific Career and Technical program at DMACC, please check with the program chair or academic advisor for that program to see what the best option would be.
Thanks,
Jen Rathje

A note from Please Pass the Love regarding supporting student mental health at this time
Today YOU have an opportunity to change or save a life you may not even know needs help by sharing this with teens and on your social media. We have to create a movement of opportunity for young people to connect NOW.
The mental health impact of covid-19 will be vast. We have to engage in prevention now. In partnership with dsmHack created a social media platform that had an entire different purpose but was quickly repurposed to be a space of interaction, lifting up, and love for teens by teens.
Please encourage any teens you know to take a peek. It's an app called Slack. We also recognize that there are a lot of kids without access to tech. We have not forgotten them and are brainstorming with other entities how to help. We are all ears for suggestions.
Here's the link for teens only to join and they can live anywhere in the world. This is NOT just an iowa thing bc kids everywhere are hurting:
THIS IS FOR TEENS ONLY. PLEASE DO NOT JOIN AS AN ADULT TO JUST SEE. IT CREATES A LOT MORE WORK FOR OUR STAFF TO HAVE TO DELETE YOU TO PROTECT YOUNG PEOPLE:)
Hurry and connect them! (If you are an adult, please do not join the Slack- we have other programming for you on our website)

AP course updates and information
Please find out the latest info regarding AP testing at the following website:
https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/
Exam Dates
Most AP teachers and students we surveyed prefer to test earlier, while the content is still fresh.
•
Exams will be given from May 11–22.
•
Makeup test dates will be available for each subject from June 1–5.
•
Students can take exams at home or in schools, if they reopen.
•
Each subject's exam will be taken on the same day at the same time, worldwide.
•
View the full testing schedule.
We encourage you to remind your students about exam dates for their courses.
Exam Format
Most exams will have one or two free-response questions, and each question will be timed separately. Students will need to write and submit their responses within the allotted time for each question.
•
Students will be able to take exams on any device they have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. They'll be able to type and upload their responses or write responses by hand and submit a photo via their cell phones.
•
For most subjects, the exams will be 45 minutes long, plus an additional 5 minutes for uploading. Students will need to access the online testing system 30 minutes early to get set up.
•
Certain courses—Art and Design: 2D; Art and Design: 3D; Computer Science Principles; Drawing; Research; and Seminar—will use portfolio submissions and will not have a separate online exam. All deadlines for these submissions have been extended to May 26, 2020, 11:59 p.m. ET. Teachers and students may receive separate course-specific communications.
•
Students taking world language and culture exams will complete two spoken tasks consistent with free-response questions 3 and 4 on the current AP Exam. Written responses will not be required. We'll provide additional details in the coming weeks to help students prepare.
Exam Scores and College Credit
As usual, students' work will be scored by our network of college faculty and AP teachers, and will be reported on a 1–5 scale. We anticipate releasing scores as close to the usual July timeframe as possible.
We're confident that the vast majority of higher ed institutions will award college credit as they have in the past. We've spoken with hundreds of institutions across the country that support our solution for this year's AP Exams.
Exam Security
Like many college-level exams, this year's AP Exams will be open book/open note. The exam format and questions are being designed specifically for an at-home administration, so points will not be earned from content that can be found in textbooks or online. However, students taking the exams may not consult with any other individuals during the testing period. We'll take the necessary steps to protect the integrity of each exam administration, as we do every year.
We're confident that the vast majority of AP students will follow the rules for taking the exams. For the small number of students who may try to gain an unfair advantage, we have a comprehensive and strict set of protocols in place to prevent and detect cheating. While some of these practices are confidential to maximize their effectiveness, students and education professionals can learn more about our security measures.
At a minimum, test takers should understand that those attempting to gain an unfair advantage will either be blocked from testing or their AP scores will be canceled, and their high school will be notified as will colleges or other organizations to which the student has already sent any College Board scores (including SAT® scores). And they may be prohibited from taking a future Advanced Placement® Exam as well as the SAT, SAT Subject Tests™, or CLEP® assessments.
Remote Instruction and Practice
On March 25, we began offering free live AP review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. The courses have been viewed more than 3.2 million times since they became available. On-demand lessons are now available for Art and Design, AP Capstone™, and Computer Science Principles.
In addition to sharing information about these classes with students, teachers who are providing remote instruction can use AP Classroom for most subjects. We've now unlocked secure free-response questions in AP Classroom so teachers can digitally assign relevant practice questions students can take at home. Additional tips for helping your students practice are available.
Student Announcements and Day 1/ Day 2 for the week
There will not school in our building through April 30.
Daily schedule reminder and Lunch Schedule for 2nd semester
Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, are our non-block days with eight periods meeting along with I.E.S. and Wednesday and Thursday are block days. Even periods meet on Wednesdays along with Connections and odd periods meet on Thursdays along with Connections.

An email from IHSAA and IGHSAU about National Clearning House and COVID-19 - April 10th update
This information came on Friday, April 10th, from the IHSAA/IGHSAU regarding NCAA Clearninghouse:
Update on NCAA Eligibility
The Iowa Department of Education recently received this guidance from the NCAA Eligibility Center regarding eligibility for prospective student-athletes.
The Eligibility Center understands that it will need to adjust its policy on pass/fail grading due to COVID-19. The NCAA will be issuing an adjusted policy on pass/fail grading, given that about half of the nation's high schools will be going to pass/fail grading. The NCAA's intent is to not disadvantage students based on COVID-19. The adjusted policy will be released in 1-2 weeks, and will apply to students in grades 8-12 who receive pass/fail grades in core courses.
The adjusted policy will be available on the Clearinghouse's website (https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/) and will be e-mailed to registered parents, high school administrators, and student athletes.

UHS Students’ Documentary Honored During C-SPAN National Competition
Congratulations to Urbandale High School seniors, Emma Schaben and Cassi Killam, for having their documentary earn an Honorable Mention in C-SPAN’s national 2020 StudentCam Competition. Their documentary looked at homelessness in the United States.
Each year since 2006, C-SPAN partners with local cable television providers in communities nationwide to invite middle and high school students to produce short documentaries (5-6 minutes) about a subject of national importance. This year students addressed the theme, “What’s Your Vision in 2020? Explore the issue you most want presidential candidates to address during the campaign.” In response, nearly 5,400 students from 44 states and Washington, D.C., participated. C-SPAN received over 2,500 submissions.
View all award winners here and be sure to view the documentary, “Homelessness” created by UHS seniors Emma Schaben and Cassi Killam. Congratulations to these talented students for their work in researching a topic of critical importance, developing a documentary that shines a light on homelessness in our community and country, and receiving national recognition for their exceptional film. We are #proudofU!
