The Fernway Flyer
December 2019
It is hard to believe that we are already into the month of December! November passed in the blink of an eye. It was a busy month for us at Fernway with our Veteran's Day Program, Reading and Technology Night, Title One Family Night, Scholastic Book Fair, and PTO movie night to name a few. Thank you all families that attended our Parent/Teacher Conferences. It is so important for the home and school to work closely together to ensure the success of our students. I hope you found the conferences as beneficial as we did.
As we move into December, we have a lot of learning and fun activities to fit into three short weeks. As a reminder, KSD 140’s Winter Break is December 20th through January 6th. Classes resume on Tuesday, January 7th.

Holiday Class Parties
Fernway will host the Holiday Room Parties on Thursday, December 19th from 12:45 to 1:45. The room parents will have many fun activities planned for the students to enjoy. We need your help though. Each student is being asked to bring in a $2.00 donation. The donations, coupled with the donations from PTO, will go towards craft supplies, supplies for games, and decorations for the parties.
If you are able, please send in $2.00 in an envelope to your child’s teacher by Wednesday, December 4th. We know our kids all look forward to these fun and festive activities. They make the year so exciting! We appreciate your support of the holiday fun!

School Environment Matters: D140 Administers 2019 Illinois 5Essentials Survey to Improve Student Learning
Share your thoughts to help improve our schools! Please take the 2019 Illinois 5Essentials survey
D140 students, teachers, and parents will be given the opportunity to weigh in on school climate and learning conditions by taking the 2019 Illinois 5Essentials survey.
This survey assesses a school’s culture and climate and provides insight into strengths and weaknesses on the five key factors that research shows are predictive of school success: Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, Involved Families, Supportive Environment, and Ambitious Instruction. School and district leaders use their 5Essentials data to better inform their school improvement plans and help identify key strengths and areas for growth.
We guarantee that survey responses will never be connected to the identity of you or your child. School reports will only present aggregated information of how parents and students responded as a whole.
Survey results will also be reported publicly on the 5Essentials reporting site in Spring 2020 and on the State School Report Card website in Fall 2020.
