Andrea Torchin, ES Principal

June 15th, 2015

Dear ES Families:

This time of year is a time of transitions and celebrations. Here in the Elementary our PK 4 students have visited Kinder classes in preparation for their move up to Elementary next school year. Likewise, our fourth graders have visited the Middle School in preparation for their move to fifth grade. Students are saying good bye to their friends who are leaving the country and as a staff we say good bye to some of our teachers.

Ms. Nunes will be moving back to Brazil this summer and we wish her well. Her students have benefited from her high level of teaching for the past three years. We say good bye, but only for one year, to Ms. Vidal who will be in Boston next school year pursuing her graduate degree. We wish her well in her studies. We have two teachers who will be on maternity leave next school year, Ms. Quintana and Mrs. Quintero. We wish them many happy moments as they welcome their babies into the world.

Last week we celebrated STEAM Day. STEAM Day was a huge success with many parents visiting our classrooms as students presented their learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Parents were able to view the videos on our interactive bulletin boards and participated in many student presentations. The bulletin boards are still up around the building. if you find yourself in school next week, please feel free to view them.

MAP Spring 2015 scores went out last Friday. The Elementary has done extremely well in all academic subjects. Please celebrate with your children their growth and accomplishments. Teachers are celebrating students as well with Citizenship Awards and individual certificates.

Over the summer, students Kinder-Fourth may continue to use their RazKids and iXL accounts to maintain reading and math skills sharp. 10-20 minutes a day can make a big difference to avoid the "summer slide." Reading for pleasure is another great way to ensure that students will enter their new grade level feeling good about their reading. Around July 20th we will working on our RazKids and iXL student databases. At this time you may find that you have temporarily lost access to your child's account.

At the end of next week you will be receiving your child's end of the year report card as well as their Writing Sample from the Opinion genre.

We wish you a relaxing and pleasant vacation and we look forward to seeing you at our Open House on Wednesday, August 5th from 11 am - 1 pm.

Sincerely, Andrea Torchin

End of the Year Writing Assessments (Kinder-4th)

All Kinder through 4th grade students participated in three end of the year writing assessments in class with their homeroom teachers. The students wrote end of the year pieces in three genres: Narrative, Informational, and Opinion. In the past students have only written a Narrative piece. For the first time, we collected information about student writing in three genres. Our students have demonstrated a huge amount of growth this school year!

Your child's Opinion piece along with its accompanying Rubric has been scanned.

This will be shared with you by your child's homeroom teacher as an attachment via email at the end of the week. When you look at the rubric, you will see a Scaled Score circled on the last page. This Scaled Score is aligned to our Grading Rubric as described below:

Edline Help Desk

Edline is an online platform that helps us communicate in a more effective way with parents and students about many items of interest including homework, assessments, events, and curriculum. Each teacher has important information that will begin to be posted during the first few weeks of school. It is important that every parent from PK to 4th grade activate their Edline account if you did not do so last year. You will be receiving an activation code during the first week of school if you are a parent who did not activate their account last year or if you are new to Balboa Academy. If you do not have your activation code or are having trouble logging in to Edline, please communicate with Mrs. Gaby Gaudiano, ES counselor @ ggaudiano@balboa.edu.pa .
