Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
We celebrated our first “Wellness Week” at WBMS, and there was something for everyone. Our message was simple -- We want all members of the WBMS community to prioritize their wellbeing. To increase fun and student social connections, we organized dress-up days and hosted house parties during Compass, and students sat with their Compass houses one day and had free seating another day coupled with interactive music or a healthy selfie photo booth at lunch; to add coping skills to our toolboxes, Summit Counseling and LRJ offered quick tips for de-stressing and a former parent taught a lesson on connecting our minds and bodies; to stretch our students’ healthy eating habits, we offered healthy food tasting during lunch and a lesson/game on healthy foods during Compass, and lastly, students made wellness goals and shared them by writing them on colorful footprints that decorated our cafeteria. Thank you to our Compass Team, PTA, Business Partners, and Staff for making this a meaningful week!
Additionally, as part of “Wellness Week,” we practiced flexibility as we navigated technical challenges with IOWA testing. Below are some answers to your frequently asked IOWA cancellation questions:
- Sixty-one schools began testing approximately 14,000 students on Monday but the system failed during the administration.
- The vendor was not able to provide a confirmed root cause or a solution or a timeline for when we could resume testing.
- All scores from Monday are invalid due to the following factors: students were unable to access materials, students were interrupted many times, system outage forced students to time out of the test, students who completed were taking the test in a less than ideal testing environment.
- · As a result, the scores cannot be used for TAG eligibility or valid monitoring of strategic plan 2022.
Impact on TAG Eligibility:
- The inability to complete the IOWA assessment will not impact our ability to identify potential TAG students or find students eligible for TAG.
- The district is preparing a plan to provide the Stanford 9 as an achievement score for any students who meet screening criteria and need the score for eligibility.
- Thank you for sharing your students with us each weekday. It is a privilege to interact with them and watch them learn and grow. Give them lots of hugs this weekend even if they try to squirm away and tell you they are too old. They will NEVER be to old for a hug from you. Enjoy your time together as a family!
