Mindfulness Month: November 2015
Regional School District 13 will partner with the towns of Middlefield and Durham to focus on our Core Ethical Values and being mindful in the month of November. The idea of working on a shared endeavor to promote wellness (being in the moment and acting/speaking with intention) was started as part of the work of the Local Wellness Coalition, chaired by Ms. Stephanie Moran, Prevention Coordinator that various members of the community and the school district serve on together. Some local agencies including the libraries and churches who have representatives on the coalition showed interest in adopting or simply supporting the District's Core Ethical Values of respect, responsibility, kindness, honesty, and courage. Additionally those groups represented at the coalition wanted to support a shared focus on wellness and narrowed the focus for this first effort to mindfulness. These two concepts: mindfulness and the core ethical values provided a framework for the partnership. Regional School District 13 is currently engaged in “The Great Core Ethical Value Challenge” where students have been asked to submit a visual representation of the CEVs. The submissions will be displayed in a slideshow at the Community Round-Up which will be held on Saturday, December 5th. During the month of November members of the school community as well as the community at large will be encouraged to be mindful, to pause long enough to think deeply, notice and appreciate all things and consider the values of respect, responsibility, kindness, honesty, and courage. We will collectively support this effort by: some of our local churches ringing their bells each day at noon and taking turns with a portable labyrinth which will be available for students and community members, libraries will display books that highlight mindfulness and examples of our core ethical values, the schools will continue their daily focus on the values and on mindfulness, signs around town will display our core ethical values, any interested local businesses can display signs saying, "Be Mindful of ..." to include each of the core ethical values, and yoga classes will be available for students and community members.
