The Meeting in Review
The January meeting began with the annual School Board Recognition Month presentation, as students representing each of the district's elementary schools presented board members with certificates of recognition for the many hours they contribute to Methacton's students, schools, and community.
Thank you to Arrowhead's Sydney Roberto, Audubon's Luca Cifelli, Eagleville's Noah Jones, Woodland's Emily Barber, and Worcester's Anthony Cancro (pictured at right presenting a certificate to School Board Director Greg Pellicano) for participating in the presentation.
Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment; Mary Katona; presented the Board with an overview of the Comprehensive Plan. The comprehensive planning process established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education is designed to assist school districts in the creation and management of a plan to submit to the Department in order to maintain compliance with state and federal mandates. The complete plan was posted to the district's website for public review and feedback, and will be presented for Board approval in February. Ms. Katona's presentation is also available on the district's website.
Dr. Zerbe noted that the district will also enter the strategic planning process in the near future. This strategic plan will build on the objectives outlined in his entry plan report as well as the comprehensive plan. The district will engage the services of a strategic planning consultant to assist in this process.
A presentation by the Pennsylvania Economy League followed. Representatives from the firm took the Board through a detailed outline of their enrollment projections. The presentation was the result of a great deal of data analysis including area population, births and enrollments; and community development activity. This data was gathered and reviewed to develop models and generate the projections. Dr. Zerbe gave a briefing of the findings in his most recent blog update. A reporting of the firm's findings relative to capacity of the district's buildings is nearing completion.
Under Personnel Items, an administrative title change was approved for Troy Sosnovik from Director of Technology and Information Services to Director of Technology, Child Accounting and Safety. This title change is intended to reflect Mr. Sosnovik's expanded responsibility for the district's new centralized registration as well as oversight of the district's safety and emergency preparedness planning.
Mr. Sosnovik plans to work with the administration, building Emergency Response Teams (ERT), School Resource Officers, as well as all faculty and staff to continue to maintain a safe school environment. His short term goals include:
- Work with district administrators to ensure MSD is meeting federal, state, and local level safety requirements.
Updates to Methacton’s Safety section of the Intranet so that safety information and procedures are easily accessible by all.
Work with the building principals, ERT, and SROs to build a consistency to our safety procedures and their communication to all staff.
The Board refused to act upon the proposed school calendar agenda item. The Board directed Dr. Zerbe to seek a before Labor Day start for 2015-2016 to be congruent with other school districts in the North Montco Technical Career Center consortium.
All other items listed on the agenda were approved.
