A little about the Olmec civilization

Olmecs-1500-300 BCE (1200-400 BCE)

-Olmecs were known to be the earliest Mesoamerican civilization. "Mother culture" of Mesoamerica

Olmec means "people of the land of rubber"

Where they lived and what the geography was like

Olmec means "people of the land of rubber" the name was given to the Olmec people who lived down near the Gulf of Mexico where is was hot and humid, and where rubber trees were native to that area. Many of the Olmec inhabited areas were low-land areas among the southeastern part of the gulf.(That is where the colossal heads that look similar to the eastern island heads were found)

Major Olmec cities

"Olmec heartland" San Lozano and La Venta were the two most inhabited Olmec sites, but there was also...San Lozano was one of the better locations for the Olmecs to inhabit because it was on a high elevation where it was safe away from floods.

What Olmec people did

Around 2000 BCE, there were already farmers in the region, farming and cropping off of its maize and rich estuarine and marine resources. The well awarded land for farming was along river levees, and traditionally refilled with rich silt. There were also hunters, fishers, and craftsmen that worked and helped provide for their families and civilization.

Olmec culture and beliefs

They carved stone carvings of many sized of decorated ceramics. They also painted paintings of their gods and major advances.The original location La Venta was large in size with about 80 acres of land. Its central feature was the Great Mound or Pyramid. Pyramids were served as ceremonial sites.

Rulers and Government

Many themes of rulership and relationship to ancestors and caves are shown by creative sculptures and paintings throughout the location. They also had many stone carvings who depicted important people within the Olmec civilization. There was a royal family that watched over the Olmec community, and various elites.

Why they were important and how they communicated

The Olmec civilization was one of the first groups to have a true understanding of learning about astrology, and mathematics. The Olmecs also had their own form of communication or language and it was called Epi-Olmec.

What they did for fun

Ball-playing court at Monte Albán, ritual game originated with the Olmec culture (1200–400 BCE) it was back then known as something similar to what we know as basketball, soccer, rugby, and other sports today.
