Family Update 10/7/22
Principal Fountain's Message To Families
The Laing SIC will be hosting a District 1 and District 2 School Board Trustee Candidate Forum on October 12th at 6pm in the Laing MS Cafeteria. 7 of the 8 candidates in these two districts have confirmed they will be in attendance.
Since school board trustee elections are critical and can be confusing, Laing SIC wants to help the community learn about the candidates. All 9 seats are up for election AND the district lines have changed for the School Board Trustee Candidates. School board candidate districts follow the newly drawn Charleston County Council District lines and are called "School Board Trustee Districts." Constituent Board Candidates still follow the "School District" lines.
Due to the changes, the best way to know who will be on your ballot is to get your personalized sample ballot. The election is on November 8th, 2022, and school board trustee and constituent board elections are non-partisan, so you will need to know their names and cannot vote the party line.
Here is the link to find your sample ballot:

Message from our JBE One President
Hello Egrets!
I am thrilled to share that JBE has hired a new Greenhouse Teacher - Mrs. Emily Rowlett! Learn about her and her upcoming Greenhouse plans for your kiddos in the spotlight below.
Which leads to this week's edition of "Where does the $ go?!" Annually JBE One pays over $60k towards portions of three teacher salaries - including this Greenhouse position. So, THANK YOU for your support of JBE One so that we have a Greenhouse teacher at the helm to work alongside the incredible Greenhouse Volunteers! This is what the upcoming Capital Campaign is all about.
Separately, I am so thankful we are able to get "back into the school!" You all remember the days of COVID where that was NOT the case. Today I snuck away from work and LOVED helping with outdoor lunch duty. I know that so many of you are enjoying being back in the school through lunch help, Greenhouse, stuffing folders and more! Thank you to all of our volunteers. If you want to know more - give me a shout at president@jbeone.org.
Hope to see you all at the Litter Pick up THIS SATURDAY, Oct 8th from 9-10:30 at Shem Creek Park!!
With a JBE Smile,
Katie D. Edwards

Staff Spotlight - Welcome Mrs. Rowlett! Our new Greenhouse Teacher!
From Mrs. Rowlett: A little about me: I am an Air Force spouse, proud mom of two JBE Egrets, and horticulture enthusiast. Our family includes my husband Mike and I, our boys Ethan (2nd) and Barrett (K), and our dog Sydney. We moved to Mount Pleasant about 3 years ago from Texas and have fallen in love with the Lowcountry. I am originally from San Antonio, but made my way to the Ozark foothills where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of Arkansas. After working several years in the civil engineering and landscape architecture fields, I became a full-time mom for a while. I transitioned to Preschool teaching before recently getting my feet wet at JBE by substitute teaching. Now I am excited to pivot into a role that I am so passionate about!
The Kenny Seamon Greenhouse offers a unique outdoor classroom that very few schools can boast, and I am so proud that I get to be a part of it! As JBE’s new Greenhouse teacher, I cannot wait to help students experience the amazing natural world of the garden! My goal is for students’ time in the greenhouse to be interactive; for them to learn by discovery. Lessons will tie in multiple areas of study including Science, History, Math, French, and beyond. Most importantly the Greenhouse will continue to provide each student the opportunity to observe nature first hand and get their hands dirty!
From JBE One: We are so thrilled to welcome Mrs. Rowlett to the JBE Staff Roster! Also, HUGE SHOUT OUT TO KIM CRANE and all the Greenhouse Volunteers for your continued hard work maintaining and improving the Greenhouse. Welcome Emily!

Literacy Night Featuring Orton Gillingham, Thursday Oct. 13 at 6-7 pm
Please join us for an Orton Gillingham information session Thursday, October 13th at 6:00pm. We are so excited to offer this in person here at JBE! Orton Gillingham is a systematic, explicit phonics approach our Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade and interventionists have been trained in. Susan Nyman and Catherine Hagberg, two of our JBE trainers will give an overview of the Orton Gillingham approach in the classroom as well as ways to help your students at home. There will also be a time for questions. We are looking forward to seeing you on the 13th at 6:00! Please email Holly_Price@charleston.k12.sc.us with any questions.
Trick or Trash
Don't let your candy wrappers go to waste!
Research shows that in the United States alone, more than 600 million pounds of candy are purchased each year for Halloween. The vast majority of candy wrappers end up in landfills due to an inability by most curbside recycling programs to recycle them. That’s where Rubicon comes in.
JBE is participating in Trick or Trash™ this year! You don’t have to trash those candy wrappers and doom them to an eternity in a landfill—or, even worse, in our oceans. Using one of Trick or Trash's™ custom candy wrapper recycling boxes, you can help keep our planet clean and contribute to the circular economy.
Please have your student gather all litter bits, take them to the front office, and deposit hem in the Trick or Trash bin. Thank you for helping us keep our planet clean!

Our Capital Campaign this year is a Color Run!
We'll kick off with a Pep Rally on Oct 31st and wrap up with a color run on Nov 11. We need business sponsorships to help offset the costs of the run. Under 8 opportunities left so hurry over to our site and grab your advertising slot today! This is a wonderful way to support our school AND get your business in front of 800 plus Mt. P Families.
Backpack Buddies
Chronic food insecurity can present many adverse consequences for children, including impaired cognitive function, compromised ability to resist illness, and higher levels of aggression, hyperactivity, and anxiety.
JBE is proud to partner with the Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) to assist in the Backpack Buddies program again this year. The mission of the program is to meet the needs of children at risk of hunger by providing them with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when they do not have access to free and reduced-price school meals.
If you are interested in participating in this free program please contact Katie Clark -Perron at Katherine_perron@charleston.k12.sc.us
