The Wonderful Westmoreland News
National Letter Writing Month
Receiving a letter or postcard from a friend or relative always brings an emotion of excitement! Show someone you truly care by writing them a letter!
In honor of National Letter Writing Month, we are asking students to take a few minutes each evening to practice their letter writing skills while showing a friend, classmate, brother, sister or teacher that they care.
To celebrate National Letter Writing Month, all students at Westmoreland School are invited to mail a letter to someone in our school via the Westmoreland Postal Service. Letters should be addressed correctly and placed in one of the mailboxes located in our school’s hallway. (See the attachment including all classroom addresses) Mail will be collected each morning and delivered on Fridays throughout the month of April.
Parents and family members are also encouraged to participate! Simply address your letters to your child(ren) using the classroom address attached and give them to your child’s homeroom teacher. Your child’s teacher will be sure that they are mailed and processed by our postal workers (a.k.a our second graders). This is a wonderful way to get students excited about reading and writing, while reminding them of how proud you are and how much you care at the same time.
Have fun and Happy National Letter Writing Month!

Author Visit, April 11th
We are honored to host author Melissa Brady Petrillo at Westmoreland School on Tuesday April 11th, in honor of Autism Awareness. Thank you to the Westmoreland PTO for sponsoring her visit!
We found the author’s background and experiences very interesting and are thrilled that she is coming to share her book with our students.
About the Author:
Melissa Petrillo noticed that few children’s books had characters with disabilities. Right away she wanted to do more research on this. She did an evaluative study and realized there was a lack of books that adequately present disability demographics.
When Mrs. Petrillo became a public high school English and special education teacher, working with students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and again she had trouble finding books that feature characters with different learning abilities. She longed to write such a book…and she did!
Children can relate to the title “Sometimes,” a word repeated throughout the book “to show how no one with any disability is the same … we all feel differently sometimes. We all have different obstacles we are overcoming.
Mrs. Petrillo will be donating her book to the Westmoreland School library. However, if you would like to purchase your own copy for your home library, please use the link below.
Students are welcome to bring their book to school on April 11th in to for the author to sign
