Miss. Hookway's Music Class
September Newsletter for Music at Oaklawn Elementary School
Welcome Back!!
Welcome to another year at Oaklawn Elementary School! We are getting back into the full swing of things, reviewing concepts that we learned last year and learning new ones. This school year is full of great opportunities for our students and I cannot wait to hear the beautiful music that they create!
Band and Strings Program
Our 5th graders will once again have the opportunity to chose a band or string instrument to learn this year. Band will be taught by Mr. Mazza and strings will be taught by myself. I will pass out the sign-up forms in their next class but I have also attached the form at the bottom of this newsletter. Students should work towards bringing their instruments starting the week of September 24th. Their weekly lesson will take place every Monday from 1:50pm-2:25pm. Please feel free to email me with any questions!
Some Highlights for the year!
3rd and 4th Grade Recorders
This year our 3rd graders will learn their first wind instrument, the recorder! They will apply concepts learned in years past and begin to read music. Our 4th graders will build upon their knowledge of the recorder from last year and advance their abilities in preparation for next year when they can pick a band or strings instrument.
General Music
In general music students will explore different musical genres, the masterpieces of some of histories favorite composers, and will learn how to read and write using music symbols! Our little ones will begin with learning about their singing voices and the steady beat.
"Music makes learning fun and makes smart winners of everyone"
Review Graffiti!
In their first class our 4th graders represented what they remembered from last year in music on my white boards. They were asked to draw pictures or write words to represent different songs or concepts that we learned. Here is an example from Mrs. Maggiacomo's class!
