Parent Peek at the Week
Week of May 25th, 2020
Welcome to the last week of May!
Can you believe it's already the last week of May?! I'm amazed at how the time is flying by!
Well this past week brought many mixed emotions as the announcement we were all waiting for finally came. Relief - as in my heart I know that the decision to remain out of the school building is the best one to keep us all safe. Sadness and overwhelmedness with knowing we won't see everyone again this school year, and how much there is to reimagine in a virtual way. Through it all, the Kawartha Heights staff remains committed to supporting your children and your family in any way we can. We still have five weeks of school left, and we'll do all we can to make them the best they can be "virtually".
Our Pedal for Hope campaign continues this well - we are at about 70% of our fundraising goal. If there is any way you can support in helping us to reach our goal over the next 2 weeks, we'd be very grateful.
Take time to enjoy the sun and warmth this weekend - it's just beautiful. And if there is anything we can do to support you this week - please get in touch.

Story time with Mrs. Sampson
This Wednesday at 3pm we'll be having another Story Time with Mrs. Sampson on YouTube Live! This week we'll be enjoying the book The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes by Mark Pett and Gary Rubinstein. Please join us! The link to join in on the fun can be found on Edsby - either in the header, or listed on the Read Aloud page in each primary class homeroom (on the left hand side of the page).
Picking Up Personal Belongings
I know that most of you have been in touch - anxious to gather your children's personal belongings from the school as soon as you can. Now that we know the school building will not be reopening, the school board has developed a protocol to ensure this can happen in the safest way possible. The protocol is being vetted through the Chief Medical Officers of Health and will be shared with staff this week. We expect to begin to have pick ups some time next week. We will be contacting each family to inform you of the process and your pick up time. Stay tuned - we're almost there!
Transition to Crestwood Intermediate School
We continue to work hard to develop a comprehensive transition plan for our Grade 6's who will be moving to Crestwood Intermediate in September. We have another transition meeting this week. If you have any questions or comments that you'd like me to share - please get in touch. In the meantime, please check the KPR homepage regularly for posted updates, including a Frequently Asked Questions document. This page can be found at: http://www.kprschools.ca/en/newintermediates.html
Moving Over the Summer?
If your family happens to be moving over the summer - please let us know at your earliest convenience. We create classes based on who is coming and who is going - so the most current information is always the best! Just email Mrs. Sampson at jennifer_sampson@kprdsb.ca. We are also continuing to take all new Kindergarten registrations. Thank you!
Lunchbox Order Refunds
This week, Lunchbox will finalize the cancellations for any outstanding orders, and parents will be notified and a credit will be placed on their Lunchbox Orders account. Credits will carry over automatically to the new school year and do not expire.
If you would prefer a refund, you can contact them directly by email at info@lunchboxorders.com to complete the return of funds to your payment card. Lunchbox Orders does not save payment card information for security purposes. A refund transaction fee (4%) is applicable. The fee represents credit card and bank charges associated with the transaction.
Balancing our Lives,........in Quarantine
Now that we know we are not heading back to the school building, we are faced with the ongoing realization that the balancing act we've all been doing has to continue. Here is an opportunity to hear from Anne Davies - a well known Canadian Educator - on some ideas and thoughts on how to take care of ourselves, while we're taking care of our kids. Please see the information posted below if you are interested in joining in.
Kawartha Heights Family Dashboard
If you are looking for some alternate activities to do with your family, the Kawartha Heights Family Dashboard is for you! You can find the link below, but you can also access it any time in the top left corner of your child's classroom homepage on Edsby.
Pedal for Hope
- Several families have asked for the link to use if you want to donate to our team. We can be found at www.cancer.ca/pedalforhope. You don't have to be an "official" team member to support (although you're more than welcome). If you're able to support the team by donating even $5 or $10, it would be greatly appreciated. Please help us to move our cougar closer to Vancouver!
- There are 2 special things happening this week:
1. We continue to accept student creations for 30 second promo videos for Pedal for Hope. A new one will be selected to be shown on the announcements next Friday - in fact we've had so many great entries, we're even showing a few extra this week!
2. This is the week we'll encourage students to cut their hair or shave their heads. If you decide to do this in your home - please send in some before and after pictures so we can celebrate with you!
We are very excited that on June 5th we will be celebrating our top fundraisers, with a special staff "drive by" to these students homes. We even hope to have a few special "guest cars" from the Peterborough Police! Fundraisers - you still have 2 weeks to encourage people to support you....Let's get our Cougar to Vancouver!
Just one more thing....
Yes - Covid-19 has given us LOTS of challenges, but life is what you make it! No matter what the obstacle, it's our mindset and attitude that determine how we move forward. Check out....The Present.
