Principal's Message
ELK Family,
We had a great week with our new SUCCESS+ initiative. We will continue to refine and improve. We received some great feedback from students about SUCCESS+. We will not have SUCCESS+ this week due to 9th - 11th PSAT testing on Wednesday, October 19th.
In addition to 9th-11th PSAT testing, we have several important events scheduled for Seniors on Wednesday morning including, a Senior Class meeting, prom fundraiser information, and a quick message from Balfour about graduation (including caps/gowns and graduation announcements). Seniors will also have valuable prep time set for SAT, ACT, and TSI, as well as, the opportunity to access Career Cruising to begin searching and accessing available scholarships.
****On Wednesday, the Senior meeting will begin at 8:45 am in the Auditorium for ALL seniors.****

The last week of October (24th-28th) is Red Ribbon Week at BHS. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the Nation. This year our student council representatives will be taking pledges from students to stay “drug free” during all three lunch periods on Tuesday, October 25th –Thursday, October 27th. Students who sign a pledge will receive a bracelet.
Students will also have the opportunity to dress to match our theme on pledge days.
Tuesday’s Theme - I Elect to be Drug Free. - Dress - red, white and blue
Wednesday’s Theme - Join the fight against drugs. Dress - Camouflage
Thursday’s Theme - Be Someone’s HERO. Stand up to drugs. Dress - Super Hero T-Shirt
The Red Ribbon Campaign reports that conversations with your teens about drug use are making an impact. “Children of parents who talk with their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t.” To learn more about drug prevention you can visit www. redribbon.org.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Dayton and Emily placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Please congratulate Dayton Eagle and Emily Prewitt.
Congratulations!

"Spirit of the Elks" Marching Band
Out of the twenty-one bands who performed in preliminary competition, the BHS band placed 5th, qualifying for them for the finals. Because the Elk Band improved the execution of music and marching drill during the finals performance, they raised their standing to 3rd out of the final ten contenders.
Only Grapevine and Chisholm Trail placed 1st and 2nd (respectively) above the Burleson band.
Congratulations!

AVID Staff Spotlight
Angelia Sifford is one of our assistant principals here at BHS. She taught Special Education, specifically modified English, Math and other academics, she also ran the Content Mastery Lab for Special Education students, 504 students, and ESL students. One year, she taught the ESL classes and ran the Content Mastery Lab- all 9th through 12th grade. Mrs. Sifford attended Texas Woman's University, The University of Phoenix Online, and Dallas Baptist University. She had a double major: Speech & Language Pathology and Special Education with a minor in Educational Leadership. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree and Masters degree. When asked, “What activities or organizations were you involved in while in college?” she said, “Baptist Student Union and note taker for at risk students and students who had not mastered the English language.” When asked if she would share one of her favorite memories from college she said, “We, about 8 of us from the BSU, went on a mission trip one Spring Break to Wisconsin. On the way home we stopped at a ski resort, which was never in our plans, bought a lift ticket and rented skis. I was the only one in the group who had ever put skis on or skied for that matter. We got to the top of the mountain and started down and it began sleeting, not snow, sleet! Remember, there were no prior plans to ski, so we were doing this in our street clothes with no protection, just regular clothes and a coat. We all wanted to ski together so bad we made it work. We were ringing wet and frozen by the time we made it down the one slope. It probably took us half the day to get down because we had to stop a hundred times from laughing so hard. Good times!” When asked, “What skills did you learn in college that you have applied to your personal and professional life?” Mrs. Sifford replied, “Taking good notes (that I understand and I can refer back to later); organization; and getting along with all types of people.” Advice that she would offer students interested in pursuing an education after high school is, “Choose a career goal, research colleges who offer the program of study, go visit the college, and pick the one you are comfortable with and willing to be a part of not just go to class.”
