Edgewood's Tiger Talk
May 10, 2019
We are committed to the journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
Notes from the Principal
Summer...as a parent, it can be equal parts excitement and dread. Excitement for kids that are exhausted after an afternoon at the park pool, for nights you don't have to worry as much about an early bedtime, for warm weather (finally?) in Wisconsin.
Dread for the questions of, "How do I fill keep my child busy?" Or, more realistically for some of us at times, "How do we avoid driving each other crazy?"
In educator land, we dread the "summer slide". This refers to the regression in skills that happens to kids across the nation over the summer. It turns out that with reading and math, as with anything, when you stop practicing them regularly, you go back a few steps. At school, most grades end the year with fun units involving series book clubs---units designed to get your kids excited to read one book after another. We hope that this will build momentum going into the summer. In addition, this summer, we'll offer both a Reading and a Math Summer Challenge to help you help your child. Stay tuned!
In addition to challenges, our wonderful instructional coach, Mrs. Lepine, led the revamping of Greenfield's Summer School. This year, there are new fun course offerings. If you're interested and haven't signed up, I encourage you to do so. If you need help, reach out, and I'll point you in the right direction. Summer School information and registration is available here.

PE and Field Day!
An exciting year in gym culminates with an All School Field Day on the afternoon of June 6th. We're still short about 20 volunteers. This is an event kids anticipate throughout the year, and it's not possible without our parent/guardian helpers. Volunteers are responsible for directing kids and running activities at a variety of different super fun stations, so it's not a job that's friendly if you've got a younger sibling in tow. Can you help? Email Mr. Warnecke @ jwarnecke@greenfield.k12.wi.us.
The Art Corner with Mrs. Nolan
Thank you to all families who have ordered fabulous Art items from Art To Remember. Such fun and beautiful items!
- K5 artists have just completed some beautiful self-portraits and Robin's Egg designs.
- 1st grade is learning more about patterns, color, line and shape in a composition by creating Ukranian eggs. They are observing the intricate details of Ukranina painted eggs.
- 2nd explored painting using various techniques in Seahorse Ocean projects. By using the proper brushes and sizes students discovered the ability to control paint strokes and the application of paint. Those fine motor skills were put to use. They are now moving on to Self Portraits.
- 3rd. After using realism in their art in the previous project, students are designed more abstract work. To connect with trips to Boerner Botanical Gardens floral pictures are growing in art class. Some of these beauties were framed and donated to the gardens for a fundraising auction.
- 4th graders are loving making paper folded/cut flowers. This is something fun for the family to create together. Ask your child to teach you how to create these.
- 5th graders explored the Milwaukee Art Museum. How fascinating it was to see the incredible art treasures!
Author Visit May 13th for Grades 3-5
He is the author of DACTYL HILL SQUAD #2: FREEDOM FIRE, the second title in his alternate history & fantasy series about a group of orphans in 1863 New York, a time when dinosaurs still roam the streets and a Civil War is still raging down South.
Booklist had this to say about Book #1: "History comes alive.... Older also continues to shine a light on heroic people of color.... Older has middle-graders' number with this dino-charged series. Stampedes are likely!”

EHSA Update
Thank you for your support with the Walk-a-thon! This event is fun for our kids, and it goes to support things at Edgewood like field trips, school events (like the 5th grade picnic), and bigger purchases that aren't in the school's budget. Several years ago, we purchased the playground on the 4K/5K/1st grade playground. Now we're raising money for a new digital school sign. It should both help communication and be a better match for great school we send our kids to.
