Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an indelible part of our country's history. Each year there is a theme set by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) and this year’s theme is Black Resistance.

Prior to the winter break, we engaged the services of a new emergency notification platform, Titan HST. On Monday, February 6 at 12:00 pm NOON, you can expect to receive a test notification email, text, and auto-call from the system. If you do not receive all three notifications, please email info@chartwell.org with the details of which notifications you did not receive.

Chartwell Family Network Updates and Events

This week the Chartwell Family Network held a meeting to brainstorm parent and caregiver engagement ideas for the reminder for the year. The focus through the end of the year will be building connections among the parent and caregiver community and raising funds for snacks for the faculty work room and future Chartwell family events.

HOT DOG DAYS - EVERY TUESDAY

Beginning Tuesday, February 7, every Tuesday between now and the end of the year, the CFN and volunteers will be selling hot dogs for lunch. The cost is $5 for a Costco all-beef hot dog, a small bag of chips, and a juice box. Vegetarian and Kosher dogs are available as is a gluten-free bun option. This option is open to all students and faculty and staff.

WEEKLY CFN SOCIAL - EVERY MONDAY

Meet up with fellow Chartwell parents and caregivers over a cup of coffee at the Starbucks in Marina (140 General Stillwell Drive, Marina). The gathering starts right after carline around 8:40 am. No RSVP is needed - just show up!

WEEKLY CFN WALK - EVERY FRIDAY

Every Friday, after drop-off, the CFN will lead a walk from the Chartwell campus. Be prepared for a combination of trails and roadways and enjoy a brisk walk in the woods while getting to know other parents and caregivers. No RSVP is needed - just show up!

A Chartwell family is looking for carpool options back to Santa Cruz after the LS/ULS wrestling academy. If anyone is planning on picking up and heading back to Santa Cruz (and has extra space in their vehicle), please send an email to Regan Albee at ralbee@chartwell.org.

All lower and upper lower school students are invited to join the Chartwell Singing Company on Tuesdays from 3:15 - 4:00 p.m. The program will start on Tuesday, February 28. Please contact Ms. Franny Huck at fhuck@chartwell.org or your homeroom teacher to sign up.

Intramural basketball began this week. The schedule going forward is as follows:

February 2 - Scrimmage; 12:25 pm

February 28 - March 2- Playoffs and Championship

The last practice and scrimmage for the high basketball teams is on Tuesday, February 7.

• The climbing club begins on Friday, February 3 from 1:30-3:00 pm. Contact Coach Darovic at edarovic@chartwell.org with any questions. The club meets Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00 pm and Fridays 1:30-3:00 pm.
• The surfing club begins Tuesday, February, 7 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 pm. Signups are here. Email Melissa Kelly at mkelly@chartwell.org or Coach Patterson at rpatterson@chartwell.org if interested in joining.

Our Project Period 3: Corporations field experience has been rescheduled to Monday, February 27.

For this experience, the high school will leave campus for the full day. Please ensure students are on time as we are departing shortly after drop-off. As part of our “Corporations” project period, students will engage in an off-campus field experience to visit the Apple Campus. We will be traveling by bus.

• All students will be going to Apple Campus.
• We are aiming to be back on campus between 3:15-4:00 pm (traffic is unpredictable).
• Lunch is included for all students.
• Students should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle. Students can bring snacks for the bus rides if they choose.
• Students who take medications during the school day will be responsible for bringing and managing their own medications. For those students who typically get their midday medication from Roz, we will bring and administer those medications.

Chartwell High School is planning a Career STEAM Day for Thursday, April 20!

We are looking for volunteers who work in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) fields to come present, share, and teach students about your career or area of expertise.
