HOME OF THE "PROUD PATRIOTS"
The mission of Cedar Grove Elementary is to grow our students into respectful, curious and productive citizens.
"One Book, One School" BEGINS THIS WEEK!
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy
This week, we will kick off our "One Book, One School" program with a "Read Across America" assembly on Wednesday, 3/2/22.
Together, our school community will be reading, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. The story is about kindness, acceptance and bravery. Our "One Book, One School" reading and character education initiative will take place from Wednesday, 3/2 through Friday, 3/18:
- 3/2/22 Assembly - Students will be introduced to the book, author and characters. We will view a read-aloud of the book with a follow up coloring activity of the author's illustrations.
- 3/2 - 3/16/22 - During "morning meetings," teachers and students will "close read" sections of text and have classroom discussions centered around topics such as perseverance, bravery, goal setting and friendship. Each day, students will reflect upon a question inspired by one page of the book. Students will share their written responses on bulletin-board-sized pages of the book located around the school.
- 3/17/22 - Students will listen to the story once more and think about the character they feel most represents themselves.
- 3/18/22 - Students will create a "hat" (or pin) with the character that they connect with, and as a class will do a gallery walk around the building to view the bulletin board pages and read the reflections shared. When students return to their classrooms, they will enjoy a culminating celebration complements of the PTO! (Shhhhh --- it's a surprise!)

COMMUNITY BASED OPPORTUNITY
A MESSAGE FROM MISS Di NARDO
Any Age Is a Good Age to Teach about Responsible Behavior
I was going through some old things, and came across “Parents Make the Difference”, from 1997. While raising children has changed a lot since then, teaching responsibility never goes out of style.
Teaching children how to act responsibly can be challenging. These guidelines might make discipline more effective.
WHEN SETTING LIMITS, CONSIDER YOUR CHILD’S AGE
- A 2 year old likes to touch everything. A 5 year old might understand, “Look, but don’t touch.”
KEEP RULES CONSISTENT
- Your child’s rules should be the same, if he/she is with you, or with other care-givers. Be sure you share your expectations with those other people. When your children know what is expected of them, it helps them behave as you would like them to.
USE METHODS YOUR CHILD CAN UNDERSTAND
- A young child who is sent to their room for hitting soon forgets why they are there.Instead, immediately saying, “We don’t hit,” may be more effective.
BE a ROLE MODEL
- Children learn from your words and behaviors. Staying in control of yourself will teach your child that he can decide to act responsibly, too.
