Workshop Overview
This manipulatives-based training is designed to provide opportunities for educators to increase the depth of understanding in their students’ mathematical experiences. The day’s work will focus on using hands-on materials to help students build conceptual models of the mathematics they are learning, based on the CRA (Concrete-Representational-Abstract) model advocated by Van de Walle and other researchers.
Hands-on materials can provide “light bulb” moments for students of all ages! A concrete model illustrates the reason(s) that the corresponding mathematics works the way it does. It is by doing, and by talking about what one is doing, that real understanding begins to occur.
Join us for a day of modeling and discussion!
