The rundown on Ridgewood Elementary - October 23, 2020
This week BSD announced that in addition to grades 4-12, those in K-3 will remain in Comprehensive Distance Learning through the end of first semester. The first day we may open for Hybrid Learning is Monday, February 8th.
With that decision made, BSD is exploring Limited in Person Instruction. This guidance allows schools to bring groups of 10 or fewer students into a building for up to 2 hours at a time. This week, both staff and families were surveyed about their comfort level, interest and conditions for Limited in Person Instruction. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey if you have not already done so, as it will inform decisions that are made in the coming weeks.
I know you may have many questions about how we will travel the path to returning students to our buildings, so I have added a Principal Chat to the calendar for Wednesday, 10/28 from 11:00-12:00. Here is the Zoom info:

Middle School Options
Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school or apply to a Learning Option Program. Transportation is provided.
Please do some online research on the Learning Options Programs and attend one or more of the virtual open houses.
Applications for the 2021-2022 school year will be available starting October 19:
Current BSD students may apply online using their student ID.
All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries.
Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school (i.e. homeschool or private school students) will need to complete a paper application available online or at any school office beginning October 19.
Applicants who don’t have internet access may complete a paper application.
Students may only select one option on their applications.
Please give careful consideration to your choice of school. Once an application has been submitted, no changes will be allowed.
Raleigh Hills and Springville will only be accepting applications for 7th and 8th grades.
Applications must be received no later than December 11 at 4:00 p.m.Important dates, deadlines and answers to frequently asked questions can be found on the Learning Options webpage.
TAG (Talented & Gifted) Identification
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, our evaluation process will look different this year. We will administer in-person TAG testing after January 11, 2021. Until then, teachers will collect evidence on how your student responds to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. This evaluation may include: file reviews, teacher and student observations, a collection of work samples, and/or individual or group assessments. This process may take some time, but every effort will be made to complete the evaluation in a timely manner. Parents will be notified of their school’s in-person testing dates in January.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked here. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.
Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to your child’s teacher.
Celebrate Reading is up and running for the year. Please tally up your monthly hours and minutes and submit them to your classroom volunteer. Prizes will be distributed at school supply pick up days. The list of classroom volunteers is below.

Dear Ridgewood Families,
I hope you are all doing well! I continue to enjoy getting to know your children, as we dive deeper into the school year. I have been joining Zoom class meetings, facilitating virtual play dates, and running a few small friendship groups. My goal is to offer more opportunities for socialization soon, especially in the upper grades, as we head into the darker and wetter months of fall. I know students are really missing each other this year.
Below are some updates and requests - please read on.
BSD Middle School Options application - now open!
Is your 5th grader interested in an option school next year? The application window for the BSD Middle School options lottery opened on October 19. Applications are accepted until December 11 at 4:00 pm. Click here to visit the BSD Learning Options page for more information.
I visited both 5th grade classrooms this past week to inform students about the various schools, and review the application process. You can view my presentation here.
It can be stressful trying to decide which school to apply to! I encourage students and parents to attend each option school’s open house to ask specific questions. Each option school should have virtual information videos posted to their websites by November 6.

Volunteering at Ridgewood
Yes, there will be many opportunities for virtual volunteering, and you can volunteer as much or as little as your schedule permits.
In addition to parents, grandparents, family, and friends are also welcome to volunteer. First, they have to complete the background check and be approved to volunteer to Ridgewood. These steps, like many others, ensure a safe environment for the students. Volunteers check in/out of the Beaverton School District’s Volunteer Management System. We call it “MyVP”. MyVP keeps record of when and where volunteers volunteer.
To join our Volunteer Taem:
Get started early – Get your background check completed and get registered in MyVP! This can take a few weeks.
Complete online at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us
- ---> Click the Community tab, on the drop down menu click Volunteer, then click the yellow box that corresponds to your role: Parent/Guardian, Community Member (grandparents use this one), or Youth, then use the “I am new” side of the page to start the process
Please feel free to contact your Volunteer Coordinator Team anytime! firstname.lastname@example.org
Stand by as we find the best ways for volunteers to join us in our online learning environment this fall!
Ridgewood Collects Boxtops!
Box Tops has phased out the version that you clip off of packages. Now, you need to SCAN YOUR RECEIPT through the Box Tops app. Click on the QR code to download the app to your phone. It takes about 30 seconds when you get home from shopping at Target, Fred Meyer, Costco, New Seasons…any store where you may have purchased a product with Box Tops.
It is easy and we are WAY behind on our yearly revenue goal for this line item in the PTC budget. So PLEASE START SCANNING (you can use receipts that are delivered with ClickList, Instacart, etc. as well). We used to raise $800 to $1,000 each year and this year we are off to a very meager start.
Yes, we can still take clipped boxtops! You may drop them off during Material Exchange or any day between 8:00-4:00 - we'll have the bin on the front porch.
