Summer Learning Opportunities
This summer, 88 students across western Nebraska attended ESU 13 Migrant Education summer programs. Five half day summer programs were held at Scottsbluff Roosevelt Elementary, Scottsbluff Bluffs Middle School, Gering Lincoln Elementary, Gordon Elementary, and Bayard Elementary. An intensive one week program was held in North Platte at Lincoln Elementary. Students at these sites worked on reading and math with teachers from their local schools, and as an added bonus, learned about Mexican history and culture through the bi-national teacher exchange program. Teachers from Mexico taught students the music, dance, arts, and crafts of Mexico. The students at Bayard, Gering, and Scottsbluff performed dances for parents and community members. Additionally, one of our bi-national teachers held DL English classes for Middle and high school students in Gordon and North Platte.
Migrant high school students learned hands on science, math, and problem solving skills at WNCC’s Discovery Lab. Students built and programmed robots to follow commands, designed and created plastic jewelry using a drafting program and a 3-dimensional printer, and designed architectural structures using K’nex and computer software. This program taught science, technology, engineering, and math in a hands-on way. Other students attended the OSHA Workplace Safety course at WNCC to gain college credit and job safety skills.

Success Story!
Gering Migrant student receives perfect NeSa writing score
Migdahi Garcia, a Migrant student in Gering, received an award for a perfect score on the NeSA writing test! Her family has moved back and forth from Texas to Bayard many times. Last school year, Migdahi had to change schools in the middle of the year when the family moved from Bayard to Gering. Changing schools is never easy, but Migdahi proves that hard work and effort, combined with great support from parents and teachers equals success and a bright future!
Congratulations, Migdahi!!!
Learning science together at Family Zoo Nights in Bridgeport
Parents and children in Bridgeport were able to learn science and new vocabulary through a series of Family Zoo Nights hosted by the Riverside Discovery Program and ESU 13’s Migrant Education Program. Kim Miedema of the zoo presented Fantastic Feet, Mammal Mania, Amazing Amphibians vs. Remarkable Reptiles, and Invertibrate: Heard of it? One mom texted, “I just wanted to let you know that yesterday was fun. My kids really enjoyed the animals. Even my husband had fun.” If you are interested in bringing Family Zoo Nights in your area, please contact Kiowa Rogers at 308-635-3696 (office) or 308-631-5476 (cell).
School Supplies for Kids
August was back to school time. For many kids, this is an exciting time. But sometimes back to school time can be tough for parents who must buy school supplies. For families who didn’t have the money to buy school supplies, it can be very stressful. This year, families from Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming helped Migrant families who could not purchase school supplies. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League generously purchased and bagged 125 school supply kits. The kits went to students in Bayard, Bridgeport, Cozad, Gering, Gordon, Gothenburg, Kimball, North Platte, Ogallala, Paxton, Scottsbluff, and Stapleton. Many families were also able to receive supplies from CAPWN and the Salvation Army. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League kits went to families who were not able to access these local resources. We still have a few kits to give out to students who move during the middle of the year, when school supplies are more expensive and other programs have run out of supplies. On behalf of all the kids who now have school supplies, thank you so much, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League!!!
ESU 13 Migrant Education Program
The ESU 13 Migrant Education Program is a Title 1, Part C program under the Nebraska Department of Education. The mission of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that migrant children fully benefit from the same free public education provided to other children. To achieve this, the MEP supports educational programs for migrant children to help reduce the educational disruptions and other problems that result from repeated moves.
