Parent Info Session ~ Internet Safety
Presented by RCMP Sgt. Kerry Shima, Supervisor of the Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) in Edmonton.
The internet plays an integral role in everyone’s lives, and when it comes to youth, their social lives exist largely in cyberspace. Over the course of the past four years and through the Global Pandemic, Alberta has experienced a significant increase in cases of child exploitation on the internet. With more users online than ever before, and new apps and software being developed every day, it can be difficult for parents and teachers to keep on top of the latest trending platform. Advancements in technology are exciting and helpful, but it opens an ever-growing gap between the levels of digital literacy between youths and busy adults.
The Northern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit investigates incidents of child luring, sextortion, possession, transmission, and the making of child pornography as well as internet-related voyeurism involving youth. This presentation will focus on education, prevention, and putting parents and teachers in a position to protect their children from online sexual exploitation. The presenters will discuss the role of ICE in Alberta, Sextortion, sharing of intimate images, current online applications and internet platforms, and additional resources which are available to parents so they will be able to better support healthy and productive online experiences for their children and teens.

Second Annual Kinosayo Family Potluck
Save the Date!
On February 1st, 2024, we are welcoming families and friends to join us for a special evening of community and togetherness at our Second Annual Kinosayo Family Potluck. This event will coincide with our Kindergarten Open House for prospective new families.
Please, join us for a delicious meal, shared together on a wintry night. You are also welcomed to come and enjoy the food, and if you would like, you can bring a dish of your choice. It could be a dish you love to share with others, a dish that has a special meaning for you and your family, or a dish that your family just loves to make. All food is welcome!
We would also love to create a Kinosayo cookbook to share with all our families, so if you would like to bring a dish, you are invited to share the recipe, too. You are invited to share a recipe even if you are unable to come on the 1st.
Because food is an expression of community and culture, we would also like to create a compliment to this cookbook that is oral, offering you the opportunity to speak to the significance of the food, why it is special to you or your family, even why it is culturally or ethnically meaningful. And because we know that sometimes the meaning of things is best conveyed in one’s mother tongue, we would love for that oral piece to be spoken in the language of your choice, with a translation offered in print for those of us who do not know your language. No ordinary cookbook will this be, but a very special one indeed.
Please send any questions you may have to Suraiya Rampuri Ranson. Many thanks, and cheers to spending a lovely evening together in February!
