Boom Of Sheep Industry

How It Started

Catching Mustangs was no longer profitable, so ranchers started to breed sheep. As a result of this, there was a boom in the number of sheep. This number got even higher when the Civil War started. During the Civil War, a newspaper reporter by the name of George Kendall encouraged people to come to Texas to raise sheep. People came all the way from Europe and Northern states.

After The Civil War

After the Civil War the demand for wool grew even more! More and more people came to San Antonio. There were so many people there that in the 1870's North and West of San Antonio started to breed large heards of sheep. The farmers got very mad, because there plants were getting walked on by the sheep. This is when barbed wire became very popular.
