Guidance
This week, The Guidance Team and fellow faculty members conducted AP exams. AP Exams are standardized exams that are designed to measure how well a student has mastered the content and skills of a specific AP course(s) they have taken. At many colleges and universities, obtaining a high score on each exam will earn the student college credit. We commend the exceptional effort each student displayed during this time.
Scheduling is an important part of a high school student’s academic career. The Guidance Team has been scheduling meetings with students through the system called SignUp Genius. The benefits to this system are that it saves time with sign up sheets and schedules for schools, sports leagues, holiday events and so on. We take into great consideration the benefits of students taking elective courses not just of interest, but that will also celebrate their individuality within the classroom setting.
Scholarships are given for a variety of criteria and are not just based solely on academic performance. Colleges offer scholarships, as well as merit scholarships, towards specific majors of choice and acts of community service. When students, parents and the Guidance team are in their Naviance accounts, they are able to view various sources of scholarship information. Please review the steps below to access the scholarship information Naviance has on their database. We also have a Scholarship Sheet for students and parents to review for additional information.
Please follow the following Naviance steps:
Log into Naviance
Find the “Colleges” tab at the top of the program.
Click on the “Scholarships and Money” tab to access a list of private and local scholarships, as well as a link to national scholarships search.

Pre-college programs provide students with an educational experience that prepares them for the transition from a high school to college academic environment. There are options of virtual or in-person settings depending on the program. These programs often feature college-level courses as well. Please find the Pre-College Sheet link below for additional information.

Ms. Stephen's Pre AP English II
Greetings from Mr. Perez's Science Classes
Science Explorations
We have just wrapped up learning about climate change that has taken place during Earth’s last 300,000 years and recent trends of current climate change using scientific evidence from direct measurable evidence and proxy indicators. Also, students have learned how El Nino and La Nina events create short term climate disruptions over the United States. Students are currently learning about geology and the magnetic field of the Earth and the many facets of its importance to life on Earth.
Animal Science & Aquaponics/Hydroponics
Just before Spring Break, students had taken soil samples from Columbus Park and are now measuring the amount of macromolecules such as Phosphorus, Nitrate, Potassium, including pH of soil horizon level A/Top Soil to determine if there is enough of these nutrients in the soil to promote healthy plant growth. In addition, students are continuing to grow their selected plants and have harvested romaine lettuce, El Jefe peppers, kale, parsley, sweet peas, and other vegetables over the last two weeks. Students have been very proud of what they have grown and will continue to grow more plants while the getting is good.
AP Environmental Science
Wrapping up the 3rd marking period, students have finalized learning about the many types of Renewables and Nonrenewables and how they are impacting Earth’s biosphere. Each student had to present a Google slide on a particular energy source, concluding the material necessary for the AP Environmental Exam.
Ms. Tank's Mathematicians
This week Mrs. Tank's Algebra 1 students learned how to rewrite radicals and solve a quadratic equation using square roots. They also took a quiz on the same topic. The Algebra 2 class learned how to identify geometric sequences and write recursive and explicit rules for the given geometric sequences. They also applied geometric sequences to real world situations. Students also reviewed, took a practice test and a test on logarithmic and exponential functions solutions to exponential models. Students can also solve exponential and logarithmic equations. This week AP Calculus students have completed six full length exams in their work books . They have also reviewed Kaplan sessions to complete Kaplan assignments to prepare for the upcoming Collegeboard AP Exams. They also took practice exams this week and reviewed tips on AP Exams on Friday. The Pre-AP Algebra 1 class learned to find solutions (roots, zeros or x-intercepts) of a quadratic equation using graphs, tables and equations. The Pre-AP Algebra 1 students were also engaged in an activity of matching graphs of quadratic functions and their factors to complete their posters.
Ms. Loughlin's African American Studies
Ms. Nelson's Culinary Arts
This week Culinary Arts students began work on their Family Recipes. The big project for Culinary Arts is the Family Recipe Project. Students learn how to cook a recipe at home that represents their family. They created a proper recipe using a template, a Slides Presentation, a grocery list and an essay about the history of the recipe.
This week and next week the students will recreate the recipe in class to share with their classmates. We have some great recipes being made. For example:Venezuelan milk truffles, shrimp ceviche, birria quesa tacos, a specialty fried rice, and salmon and vegetable rice to name a few.
International Pastries celebrated Cinco de Mayo with the making of a churro layer cake.
PE Students Getting Stronger
This week students participated in the year end fitness testing: push ups, sit ups, and the pacer.
In September we did an assessment to get baseline data/number of repetitions of each individual student. This is based on their maximum effort and what they as individuals are able to do. Throughout the year engaging in 30-45 minutes of activity on a daily basis, participating in sports, or joining other extra curricular activities has led to small daily improvements in their cardiovascular and muscular strength/endurance. The students committed themselves throughout the various activities and it shows, the post-test numbers are booming and students all improved in various ways. We are proud to see the enthusiasm and motivation they gave classmates and friends to beat their prior scores!
Ms. Mattera's Teen Action Task Force
The adolescent years can be a time of great upheaval. The physical and hormonal changes often create emotional ups and downs as kids struggle to assert their independence and establish their own identities. According to United States government statistics, by age 15, nearly 30% of kids have had at least one drink, and by age 18, that figure leaps to almost 60%. These statistics are similar to patterns reported in other countries. Many teens will try alcohol at some point out of curiosity or peer pressure; there is no single reason why some decide to drink. The more we understand potential reasons for underage alcohol use, the easier it will be to talk to teens about the dangers and identify any red flags in their behavior.
Hoboken High School's Teen Action Task force hosted an event demonstrating the dangers of binge drinking and how alcohol negatively impacts decision making, balance and coordination. Binge drinking is defined as drinking so much within a short space of time (about two hours) that blood alcohol levels reach the legal limit of intoxication. For teens, that usually means having three or more drinks at one sitting. Young people who binge drink are more likely to miss classes at school, fall behind with their schoolwork, damage property, sustain an injury, or become victims of assault.
For more information on the dangers of underage drinking and 24 hour hotlines please visit our Resource Bulletin Board or contact Ms. Mattera at gmattera@hoboken.k12.nj.us
Welcome to the Hoboken School Based Youth Services Student Center!
Our goal at the Student Center is to provide students with the skills and tools needed to overcome challenges, develop a healthy sense of self, and build strong positive relationships with peers, family, school, and community members. We strive to promote academic and social emotional wellness while helping students navigate their day-to-day.
This week we facilitated a 3-day chat & chew series opportunity for students to decompress, connect, and practice self-care. During the group, students reflected on their school year and discussed goals for the future all while creating their own artwork. This art activity was a model for just one of many ways that students can engage in self-care to wind down and disconnect from the stress and commotion of their everyday life. Stay tuned for upcoming Chat & Chew events and activities. For any student interested in participating in future Chat & Chew events, stop by the Student Center to sign up.
Our Safe Sitters training program is on its way. Students have the opportunity to learn safety, first aid & rescue and child care skills. They'll also learn life skills and the business side of the child care industry. The workshop is spearheaded by none other than our nurse, Mrs. Turonis and our school library media specialist, Mrs. McGreivey. After this four day training our students will be certified Safe Sitters. Be on the lookout for other workshops and activities.
For any students that may be on the hunt for summer employment, see any Student Center staff member for more information on a summer camp opportunity. We can also assist you with resume building and providing tips and tricks to ace an interview process.
If you find that you need some time to decompress and relax during your lunch period, remember to stop by the Student Center. Want to play a game of pool with your friends? Want to challenge a friend to a ping pong match? We've got you covered. Come relax in our meditation room if you're looking for some quiet time or catch up on some school work in our study lounge.
