Hokulani Updates
COVID-19 Update as of 18 March 2020 (4:00 p.m.)
Dear Hokulani School Community
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to respond to the ever evolving COVID-19 situation.
Today, Supt. Kishimoto indicated that school campuses will be closed and not available for 15 calendar days starting 19 March 2020. While there is a possibility that essential workers could be called in starting 24 March 2020, my hope is to wait until the full 15 days have passed before calling employees in. This might not be the case with all DOE schools.
Starting Monday, 23 March, teachers will use the time (Thursday is a holiday) to plan for distance learning opportunities. They are not on vacation. They will be using the time to plan . Distance learning for students will start on Monday, 30 March through 6 April. As of right now, students are expected to return to campus on 7 April.
Distance learning is understood to mean learning while not on campus. This could be done through virtual classrooms. It could also be done through reading, writing, math, and discovery lessons at home. If your family does not have access to devices (iPad, laptops, desktops) dedicated for a student's learning, students can read whatever reading material you have at home, write about what they read, what you discuss, or what they learn. If you have a yard, they can work in the garden with you. If you are "shopping" they can practice math through budgeting, cooking, and even price comparisons. Teachers will NOT be coming to campus to prepare study packets. Following is a list of learning sites available to students:
- Reading A-Z
- Xtra Math
- IXL
- ILE (EL learners)
- Google classrooms (usually grade 3 and up)
- our school library and ebook collection.
Teachers have access to other websites and might push lessons to students via Class Dojo, email, or through their Google Classrooms.
I will also share public sites for virtual museum tours, art lessons, etc. on our Facebook Page which is simply Hokulani El. You'll know that you are on the correct page when you see our robotics team in their black shirts on the cover page.
Communications:
Our main method of communication will be from me via email at laurie.luczak@k12.hi.us, this newsletter, our school website, or the HIDOE website, COVID-19 page. I will attach the link to that again.
