History

The word cottage comes from England where it originally was a house that has a ground floor with a lower story of bedrooms which fit within the roof space. In many places the word cottage is used to mean a small old-fashioned house. A lot of cottages can be found near bodies of water.

In the Middle Ages this style of home was used to house farmers and their families. They were often called "huts"

In the UK the term cottage was used as a small dwelling of traditional build. It can also be applied to dwellings of modern construction which are designed to resemble traditional cottages.
