Principal's Message
Dear BHMS Families,
Broomfield Heights Rocks!! Your students are so enthusiastic, polite and hard-working. We expect great things to come from our current group of learners and leaders!
We have a celebration to share at BHMS! Ms. Marissa Dobrez has been named the recipient of the Colorado Health Education Teacher of the Year Award for 2017! This is an honor from the Colorado Society of Health and Physical Education (SHaPE). Ms. Dobrez works with almost every one of our students in their time at BHMS. She is caring, dynamic, resourceful and a leader in our work. Ms. Dobrez makes a positive difference in our kids’ lives and it is with great pride that I share this celebration with our community. The next time you see Ms. Dobrez, tell her “congrats” for this well-earned honor!
I have a homework assignment for you! Ask your student about what it means to DREAM at BHMS! Your students hear a consistent message about DREAM, an acronym for our five core values: Determination, Respect, Equity, Achievement, and Mindfulness. We encourage you to reinforce this language with your students in their everyday lives. How do we ensure that we are demonstrating respect? How can we be mindful of ourselves, our actions and our impact on others? What are the steps to achieve our greatest potential? The more you can discuss and challenge your kids to reflect on their values and beliefs, the greater the outcomes for them!
Know that our teachers are available for extra help, reteaching, reassessment, and other opportunities for students to connect with them outside of the traditional class setting. All of our teachers incorporate these opportunities into their work. Please visit our common document that specifies availability for each teacher. If you have specific questions, please contact the teacher directly.
Our community thrives with all of your support. Please thank you children for being fantastic and active members of our school. We are all lucky to be Falcons!

A FRIENDLY LUNCH REMINDER
Students may bring a sack lunch or purchase a lunch in the cafeteria. If your student brings a sack lunch, it is the expectation that the lunch comes with the student at the beginning of the school day, and not be delivered in the middle of the day. If your student forgets their sack lunch at home and it gets brought in after school starts, please note that we will not be interrupting classes to deliver those. Your student will need to know to come to the office to pick it up. Again, it is the expectation that there are no lunch deliveries during the school day. Thank you!

SYNOPSIS:
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can
empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
WEATHER POLICY
While it's very early in the school year, we want to make sure everyone is aware of our cold weather policy. Our students will be outdoors until the bell rings every day, unless the weather drops below 20 degrees or it's significantly raining/snowing. Only in these instances will we open up the cafeteria and allow students to enter the building before the first bell.
