Principal's Message
Hello BSMS Families!
I hope you are all staying warm during this bitter cold streak. For someone like me that loves the warmth of the summer heat, there are only 4 months until Memorial Day- We got this!
On Friday, February 4th, eighth grade students will be participating in an Agricultural Career Fair here at the middle school. Presenters will be speaking to our students about the various career fields available in the agricultural sector. Be sure to ask your student about the fair, and what they were able to take away from this great opportunity. For students that connected to the experience, field trips to various workplaces will be available later in the Spring.
Our PBIS team is working on ways to continue to celebrate our students who rock and roll each and every day. Teachers are on the lookout for students that are displaying Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline, and Engagement (RISE). Mr. Jenkins is awarding these students with prizes, and treats to show our appreciation for their dedication to our school culture. Hopefully you have received an email to let you know that your student has been scanned as a method of recognition for their efforts. We appreciate all that you do at home to reinforce these skills.
A reminder that Friday, February 18th, is now a snow make-up day. Classes will be held in person.
Take care!

Principal
Open House
We are excited to open up the building to the Bermudian Community. Please come to Open House on Sunday, February 13th, between 2-4pm to tour the building. We are so thankful for this amazing space, and want to be able to share it with our families!
Parent Loop Procedures
Thank you for all your work in adjusting to the new processes for drop off and pick up. A reminder to pull up to the far end of the parent loop when stopping so that there is ample room for all cars to load/unload. Also, a reminder to make a right hand turn when exiting the middle school drive in order to keep the flow of cars/busses moving. We appreciate your patience as our community works towards adapting to the new patterns.
Recess Reminders
A reminder that 5th and 6th grade students will go out for recess as long as the weather is above freezing. Please ensure they are dressed for the colder weather, including long pants and jackets/gloves/hats.

COVID Reminders
Please notify the school if your student or anyone in the household has symptoms and/or has been diagnosed with COVID-19 before sending students to school. Students are to be free from vomiting, diarrhea, and have temperatures less than 100.5 F without the use of Tylenol or ibuprofen in order to attend school.
February is National Dental Health Month
Lifelong dental habits begin at home:
☺ Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste (especially after breakfast and before bed).
☺ Floss every day.
☺ Don’t forget to change your tooth brush regularly, especially after an illness.
☺ Limit eating sticky and/or sugary snacks to help prevent cavities.
☺ Drink plenty of water after eating to help clear your mouth of food particles.
☺ Protect your teeth by wearing a mouth guard when playing sports.
☺ Visit a dentist regularly for routine cleanings and exams.
Love your smile.
Reminders:
All 7th grade students are required to have a dental exam, please return the purple dental exam form as soon as possible. If you need a form, please contact me, or visit our Health Services tab on the district website and click on Health Forms to print https://www.bermudian.org/domain/110
Please submit proof of any updated vaccinations to the nurse. All 6th graders are required by the state of Pennsylvania to have a Tdap and MCV (meningitis vaccine) before starting 7th grade.
Please contact the school immediately if your child is kept home to quarantine or has tested positive for COVID. This will ensure your child receives their schoolwork and any other necessary steps to be taken.

Mrs. Gilliam
Seventh grade students took on the role of Real Estate Developers in Ancient India. They were asked to research a geographic location they felt was ideal for building a community in India. Eventually, they shared a presentation they created to convince "potential investors and home buyers" that their location was the ideal place to build homes.
Please ask your seventh graders to share their development plan with you!
8TH GRADE NEWS
Congratulations to Adeline Nelson who received recognition in the South Central Pennsylvania Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for two of her writing pieces. Her short story "To Whoever Finds This" won the Silver Key Award, and her flash fiction piece "Scared-y Cat" received an Honorable Mention.
Mrs. M. Miller's Math Classes
Students in Mrs. Miller's classes played a Castle Review Game where they battled in groups to defeat the fire-spitting, fierce-looking (yet still cute!) Dragon! Each question reviewed essential concepts from our Polynomials and Factoring Unit.
Teams worked together to solve problems. With correct responses, they rolled a dice to either unleash the "x of fire" from the dragon on another castle OR they could erase an "x of fire" from their own castles.
It was great to see students collaborating, supporting each other, and reinforcing concepts to BEST prepare for the unit test! No doubt these students' math skills are "on fire" ;)
NEWS FROM THE BAND ROOM
Now that we have a beautiful new space that's big enough to house us all, 5th and 6th grade are once again joining forces for band. No more Cherry or Steel, now all of Mrs. Danielson's band students will be in 5/6 Band together. Band will meet during Resource on DAY 2 and DAY 4.
Day 6 during resource is "open band" time. With permission from their Resource teacher, students can come in for a make-up lesson, individual practice, or they can come in and work with a mentor student. This is a great opportunity for some of my more experienced players to work with beginners and give them some tips!
I also recently told students about an opportunity to participate in an essay-based Scholarship contest! Students can choose to write an essay of 250 words or less answering the questions: "Why did you sign up for band? Why are you sticking with it?". Rules and requirements are in canvas.
As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns at any time. I'm very pleased with the progress your young band students are making this year!

Attendance Reminders
Attendance Excuses
A reminder that a written excuse is required for all tardies and absences. Upon returning to school after an absence, students must report to the office with written documentation signed by their parent or guardian. All written excuses must be provided within five school days of the absence.
Please feel free to complete this form if your child will be absent, tardy, or a scheduled early dismissal. Google Form for Absences. A paper excuse will not be needed in the office if this form is electronically submitted.
Absences will be marked as unexcused until an excuse is provided. Excessive unexcused absences can result in truancy situations and/or fines.
Family Educational Trips
All trips must have prior approval in writing. Please request a family trip form from the office, complete it, and return to the office for pre-approval by the building principal no later than a full week prior to the trip. Neglecting to gain prior approval for the educational trip will result in the recording of unexcused absences for those days absent from school.
Reminders
- Requests for educational trips during PSSA testing dates will not be excused.
- The maximum number of days allowed to accumulate for educational trips is 10 days per school-year.
