Stephen Mohr: 2019 Youth Holocaust/Genocide Awareness Award Winner
Brookside’s very own fifth-grader Stephen Mohr took home first place at the 2019 Youth Holocaust/Genocide Awareness Awards! Nominated by his teachers, Mrs. Dias and Ms. Zygiel, Stephen became keenly interested in Holocaust and World War II studies after reading the novel The Island on Bird Street in class. When the Holocaust unit on the Holocaust ended, the journey did not end for Stephen.
Kidsbridge Diversity Center, sponsor of the award, is a nonprofit organization providing programs for bullying and cyberbullying prevention, tolerance and respect for all persons, and conflict resolution and empathy. Stephen's award was presented to him by holocaust survivor, Maud Dahme, who gifted him the book she had written about her story, including a personal dedication to Stephen. Presentation was at the New Jersey State Holocaust Commission educators’ meeting on June 5.
Pictured below are: Lynne Azarchi, Executive Director, Kidsbridge; 5th grade teacher Mrs. Dias; 5th grade teacher Ms. Zygiel; Stephen Mohr, 1st place winner; Maud Dahme, Holocaust survivor and Lawrence Glaser, Director of N.J.’s Commission for Holocaust Education.

Wrapping Up Perimeter
Ms. Bellefemine's third grade class went outside to wrap up their Area/Perimeter studies. Students worked in pairs. The object of the game was to solve an area/perimeter task card with a partner and get it checked to be sure it was correct. Then, they had to fill up their water balls and run back to their cups. The first team to overflow their cup with water was the winning team! More task cards solved correctly meant more chances to fill up their team's cup. Such a great combination of review of skills/teamwork and movement!
September's School Supplies -- It's Not Too Late to Order
We are all balancing so many things, especially when it comes to our kids. Take one thing off your list by ordering a school kit for your child(ren) now. Supplies will be on their desks when school starts. This is the easiest way to check an item off your to-do list!
Use this link to place your order: https://www.shopttkits.com/. Brookside's SchoolKidz account number is 38680. Please remember to order for the grade your child is going into.
The kits do not come with headphones. You can order a pair through SchoolKidz or children may bring in their own in September.
Health Office: Summer: Enjoy Every Minute!
Follow these recommendations from Mrs. Parke to help ensure everyone has a happy, healthy, and safe summer:
Sun Protection
Use sunscreen and limit sun time or find a shady place to take a break. The sun is the strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Stay Fit
Follow the “5-2-1 Rule.” Eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables, have less than 2 hours of screen time, and be active for at least 1 hour every day. Skip sugary drinks.
Pool Safety
Swim with an adult, lifeguard, or “buddy up” (swim with another person), follow the pool rules, don’t run near the pool, and don’t push other kids in or near the pool.
Bike Safety
Always wear a helmet to protect your head! Make sure your seat, handlebars, and wheels fit tightly; check and oil your chain regularly; check your brakes to be sure they work well and aren’t sticking; and make sure your tires have enough air.
Insect Bites
Protect yourself from bug bites and stings by wearing repellant or light clothing with long sleeves. Avoid coming into contact with poison ivy.

"R" Is for Reading Day
During Brookside’s "End Of The Year ABC Countdown," the letter R stood for Reading day! Students enjoyed reading in groups with other classes to help meet new friends. Here are some shares from the second grade as well as Ms. Morales’ kindergarten and Mrs. Vaughan’s third grade buddy reading.
