Erin's Law
Dear District 228 Families:
The Comprehensive Health Education Act, often referred to as Erin’s Law, was signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn. This law requires all public schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for all students in grades PreK-12 and to provide training on sexual abuse prevention for all staff.
District 228 Social Workers and School Psychologists will be providing age-appropriate lessons on personal safety to all students in PreK-5th grade this year. Student lessons will take place during an upcoming library time will incorporate concepts and skills that are developmentally appropriate based upon grade levels.
Lessons are adapted from the Second Step Committee for Children Child Protective Curriculum that focus on teaching students basic skills to help keep them safe from abusive or dangerous situations. Some concepts discussed during presentations will include:
• Personal Safety. Students will learn important safety rules, such as safety with guns, sharp tools, and fire, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.
• Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
• Assertiveness. These lessons will also give students a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
More information on lessons can be found by going to SecondStep.org and using the following family access codes.

On the exterior of the buildings, our licensed maintenance staff will apply weed control during the weeks of March 25-29, 2019; June 10-14, 2019 and July 22-26, 2019. If the weather does not permit the treatment outdoors, it will be done on the next day that weather does allow treatment. Substantial rain and/or wind would cause treatment to be postponed to the next day.
If you have any questions, please call the Unit Office (309-945-0450). Thank you.
Impact of Participation for Illinois Assessment of Readiness
The week of April 8th, our 3-5 grade students will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness exam. Please see information from the Illinois State Board of Education regarding the importance of taking the exam.
"A school’s participation rate on state assessments impacts its rate of proficiency and its annual designation. ESSA requires states to calculate proficiency by dividing the number of students who met or exceeded standards by either the number of students who tested or 95% of the number of students who should have tested, whichever is greater. Schools with less than 95% participation in state assessments are ineligible to receive the Exemplary designation. Schools with any student group that has a participation rate below 95% for three consecutive years will develop and implement a Workplan for School Improvement. English Learners must take all portions of the IAR to meet federal requirements, even those in their first year in the U.S. Their results in that first year provide a baseline for growth but do not count for accountability."
Kindergarten Registration
If parents would still like to come on site for registration, it will be held Thursday, April 11th from 4-7 PM at Millikin Elementary. We will have computers available for you to complete registration in the Collaboration Lab, as well as people to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

Health Reminders
It's that time of year... Below are the health requirements to prevent the spread of germs!
- Students must be fever free (without medication) for 24 hours prior to returning to school.
- If your child has been vomiting or has diarrhea, please do not send your child to school until they are able to tolerate solid foods without vomiting or having loose stools.
- If your child needs to take medication during the day (either prescribed or over the counter), a parent or guardian needs to fill out a medical authorization form and turn into the nurse. Medication needs to be brought in by an adult.
- Encourage your child to wash their hands!
Attendance Reminders
We are getting ready to begin our 4th quarter! This last stretch is exciting and full of student growth. Please remember that student attendance is critical for this continued growth. Continue to encourage healthy habits that promote attendance: regular bedtime, breakfast, and homework routines.
Also, as our Illinois Assessment of Readiness is coming up for 3rd-5th grade students April 8th-12th, we encourage you to try to schedule appointments outside of the school day.

Tribute to Educators Program
The Geneseo Education Foundation (GEF) is excited to roll out our new and improved Tribute to Educators program. Formerly known as “Tribute to Teacher”, this program was renamed to emphasize honoring all educators (including but not limited to) teachers, principals, guidance counselors, coaches, cafeteria workers, school secretaries, school nurses, custodians, social workers, or teacher assistants. This is a chance for students and parents to say "thanks" to the one that has made their child's year special by making a donation.
All entries are due by April 15.
