The Louisiana Purchase

By Mathew Watts

A Purchase Has Been Made

A new land purchase has been made in the United States. The year is 1803, and the president was currently elected Thomas Jefferson. France had been having land disagreements with Spain like the fight to take control over Saint- Domingue. So in 1801 Jefferson sent Robert R Livingston an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat from New York to Paris after he about the transfer of Louisiana from Spain to France to purchase New Orleans. Americans were ready to pay up $10 million dollars for New Orleans when a much bigger deal came up at a very unexpected price. France was willing to give them almost all of there land in North America for only $15 million dollars. They thought that he would withdraw that offer at any given moment so the signed the treaty and payed up right away on April 30, 1803.
