We will be giving the state English test on Monday and Tuesday (October 18th and 19th). Students in grades 9, 11, and 12 will be testing. For more information, see the testing section later on in this newsletter.

REMINDER: HEALTHY YOUTH SURVEY OCTOBER 21ST
Our school is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey on October 21st. Students in grades 10 (English classes) and 12 (History classes) will participate in the survey.
The Healthy Youth survey includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, abuse, risk and protective factors, and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.
Participation is voluntary and the students' answers are anonymous.
We will be administering the survey online this year. No privacy issues were identified in the E-survey pilot conducted by the state in 2019. This year schools are being instructed to disable any recording, keystroke tracing, and video capture software on school-issued devices used to take the survey. We will also instruct students to do the same on personal devices used to take the survey before they begin. If you use any software to monitor the device your student will use to take the survey, please turn it off before they being to ensure their honest participation.

REMINDER: FALL CONFERENCES
Fall conferences will be held on October 27th-29th. The first quarter ends on November 5th so now is a good time to check in on how your student is doing.
We have conference times available the afternoons of all three days, along with an early evening session on Thursday, October 28th.
Please contact Wendy Fox at (360) 629-1300 or by email at wfox@stanwood.wednet.edu to set up a conference.
Parents/guardians have the option to have the conference in person or virtually. Please let Wendy know your preference when you contact her.
REMINDER: WARM COATS FOR KIDS
Hello Families,
I would like to share some progress we have made toward returning schools to a more traditional setting. Although we are not yet ready to open our schools to outside groups, we are ready to allow schools to safely plan for some events. If a school has an event or activity that they would like to host, we have developed a request process that requires schools to outline the requested activity or event and the school’s plan and ability to comply with all state and local safety requirements during the activity or event.
Requests made by schools will be addressed on a case-by-case basis by our district COVID health and safety response team. Although this is not a full reopening of all extra curricular activities and community partnerships, it is a step we believe we can take safely.
SHS Open Gyms/Athletic Facility Use
Similar to the message above, we have engaged in a process with Stanwood High School to safely open the athletic facilities to current students. The high school will be communicating their process and safety measures to families and students soon. The allowable number of students in our facilities will be less than it would be in non-COVID times, but this is a positive move for students and our community.
When to Stay Home from School
We know it is hard to miss a day of school, but we feel it is important to reshare updated guidance from the Department of Health on Staying Home When Sick. Further information on when to keep your student home can be found under the COVID tab on our website.
Early Reminder of Fall Conferences
October 27th, 28th and 29th are early release days for parent-teacher conferences. The schedule for those days will be 7:40 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. for secondary schools and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for elementary schools. Please note that the 27th is a Wednesday but is not a late start day. Schools will soon be reaching out to you to schedule conferences. You will have the option to attend in person or virtually via Google Meets. Please contact your student’s school if you have questions.
Hiring!
We are still looking to hire talented and passionate members of our community to work in our schools. Specifically, we are looking for substitute teachers, bus drivers, paraeducators, and an electrician. Please share this information with others or apply online yourself through our SCSD Employment Page.

LIBRARY INFORMATION
The library hours will open from 7:10 a.m. - 2:40 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can visit the library website for more information or check out the Destiny Discover catalog for the latest books.
If you have not yet picked up your chrome book, you will need one for state testing. Stop by the library during regular hours. If you were not able to pick up textbooks with your class and you still need one, please stop by the library during regular hours.
Students need to keep the chrome books all year long, not just for state testing. Students use the chrome books in their classes and advisory.
If a student has an issue with their school-issued chrome book, please have them return it to the library. We have a form for the student to fill out (student name, ID#, and issue). Our building tech coordinator will pick up the chrome books to get them fixed.
If your student needs any tutoring support, please check with Sno-Isle Library. Here is the link to their Brain Fuse site.
