There's no substitute, she's found, for the great work of education
MEET SUSAN FORSYTHE
All you really need to be a substitute teacher, says Susan Forsythe, is the desire to give and grow together with a great group of people whose task it is to make Red Wing Public Schools work.
She has been doing exactly that for seven years.
A couple of days each week she can be found at Burnside, Sunnyside or Twin Bluff Middle School. The principals note that she goes where the need is.
"I have plenty of stories. Beautiful moments happen every day at Red Wing Public Schools," Susan said.
Why do you substitute in local classrooms?
Red Wing has many excellent teachers and staff members. Their job is rewarding but extremely difficult, now more than ever due to the pandemic. As a substitute I get to play a support role to these dedicated educators.
What do you enjoy most about the work?
With a reason to be inside of Red Wing Public Schools I have the privilege of developing relationships with these staff members. I like helping them and I like helping students grow in confidence and ability to contribute to their community. All these relationships, which I have because I substitute, are gifts which enrich my life.
How do you connect with students?
I try to stay genuine and truthful, patient and kind. My aim is to excite the curiosity of young people to cause them to take charge of their own learning.
What keeps you going back day after day and year after year?
Aiding teachers and empowering students is what keeps the work of a substitute interesting.
