Charles Manson is an American cult leader whose followers carried out several notorious murders in the late 1960s and inspired the book Helter Skelter.
Early Signs Of A Serial Killer?
- In first grade Charlie would convince gullible young girls to attack students he didn't like. When caught, he would tell the teacher the students were doing what they wanted and Charlie would not be held accountable.
- When Charlie was seven, he attacked his cousin Jo Ann with a razor-sharp sickle he found in the yard. When asked what happened Charlie said Jo attacked him and he was only protecting himself.
“We were all very sad and horrified, but not surprised,” Jo Ann says. “Once you really got to know Charles, anything awful that he did was no surprise.”
Manson gathered a group of followers who shared his passion for an unconventional lifestyle and habitual use of hallucinogenic drugs, such as LSD and magic mushrooms. "The Family," as they became known, moved to San Francisco and later to a deserted ranch in the San Fernando Valley. His followers, numbering around 100, also included a small hard-core unit of impressionable young girls. They began to believe, without question, Manson's claims that he was Jesus and his prophecies of a race war.
The first series of mass murders, called the "Tate" homicides, occurred at the home of Sharon (Tate) Polanski. Three victims were shot and/or stabbed multiple times on the grounds of the estate. These were Abigail Folger, Steven Parent and Voiytek Frykowski. Sharon Polanski and Jay Sebring were murdered inside the house. Sharon, 8 months pregnant at the time, died from numerous stab wounds, five of which were by themselves fatal & Jay died of blood loss. Both had their necks loosely attached by a single rope over a rafter.
