IT'S ALPHA DELTA KAPPA MONTH!!!!
WISHING YOU MANY MEMORIES OF SISTERHOOD THIS MONTH
Agnes Shipman Robertson Jan 24, 1895 - Ap 27, 1987
Agnes is my favorite of our four Founders of Alpha Delta Kappa in Missouri in 1947. She is my favorite because I had the honor to meet her at a Regional Conference in AR in the '80's. She had always been the petite spitfire, full of energy like the Energizer Bunny, who was the impetus and the motor of the sorority. But I saw a small, frail lady that everyone in the room wanted to talk to. She might say, "Straighten your pin" instead of 'Hello.' You couldn't say 'no' to Agnes, I had heard. And she was dressed to the nines, always. The late Mayme Chinn, Past Grand President (1985-1987), said, Agnes's mind worked overtime to envision our goals and her dreams of our scholarships and altruistic efforts. "Her courage, strength, tenacity, and fortitude have cast in cement our goals," Mayme said. In Mayme's tribute to Agnes in Agnes Her Life and Times, she relates that Woodrow Wilson believed that we grow great by dreams. Dreamers see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of long winter's night. Some let these dreams die; but others nourish and protect them. They nurse them through bad times until they brought them into sunshine, which comes only to those who are determined to make their dreams become a reality. Agnes was a dreamer for eternity, a maker of the afterworld. The world is beautiful because she lived. My logo reflects that as members of this great sisterhood, we are "Dream Chasers and Star Makers." Agnes was our first star and her star still influences the direction Alpha Delta Kappa takes. Let us pursue her dream. And as our International President Mollie Acosta's logo reads 'Share the Love' of Alpha Delta Kappa this month as we celebrate 75 years.

Hattie Poppino - A Librarian after my own heart
A teacher for many years, Hattie taught commerce and library at Garnett and Chanute, Kansas, before becoming the librarian at Argentine High School in Kansas City, Kansas in 1945. Hattie was a member of several professional associations, including the National Education Association, Kansas Teacher's Association, Kansas Library Association, and the Kansas Association of School Librarians. She was the policy maker.
Marie Neal - first Treasurer
Marie’s belief that a fraternal organization could create a strong bond between women, an idea so important to the founding of Alpha Delta Kappa, began with her collegiate sorority (Chi Omega) experience. She was their treasurer for two years and brought her experience to our sisterhood. Her husband traveled to schools and she sowed the seeds of membership as she traveled along with him. Marie served Alpha Delta Kappa as Executive Secretary-Treasurer from 1947 - 1969.
Marion Southall - The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa
Marion had studied Accounting at college and was active in her sorority. Her husband, Richard C. Southall, attorney, acted as general counsel to Alpha Delta Kappa. Before reasons beyond her control forced her to go inactive in 1956, Marion served as the first National Vice-President and head of the Executive Board. Our official song "The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa" was composed by Carolyn and Richard Southall, children of co-founder Marion Southall.
OCTOBER IS ALPHA DELTA KAPPA MONTH
The Logo of Leadership
Dream big and set your eyes on a star of leadership. Step up and run for a leadership position. This spring we will elect new chapter and S/P/N officers and by July we will vote on the new Regional Vice President position. Many offices to fill. Will you accept a leadership role on the S/P/N Executive Board or as an essential chapter officer? It is very rewarding to extend your circle of friends past the chapter level.

Ways to Celebrate our Founders This Month
Plant a tree; get a mayor's proclamation; join your chapter in doing a community service project; put a bowl of red apples in each teacher's lounge in local districts with an Alpha Delta Kappa logo; get together online via zoom or in person with your chapter, district or state for a Founder's Celebration.
