How Mountains Form
Fold, Block, and Volcanic
Fold Mountains
Folding mountains form when to plates collide and they begin to fold over each other. They folds created jagged and rocky slopes that form high, towering mountains over millions of years.
Block Mountains
These mountains form when faults or cracks in the earth's crust force some materials or blocks of rock up and others down. Instead of the earths crust folding, they break apart into block and begin to be pushed up by other blocks.
Volcanic Mountains
Volcanic mountains are formed by volcanos. When a volcano erupts, the magma cools and forms rock. The rock then piles up layer over layer until a mountain forms.
