Students "Earning While They Learn" in the Gaston College Youth Apprenticeship Program
The Gaston College Youth Apprenticeship Program offers services and programs that prepare individuals to enter and succeed in Registered Apprenticeship programs. To be considered as a high school Youth Apprentice a student must meet the following criteria: be at least 16 years old, be in good academic standing--GPA 2.5 or better, have a good attendance record, must be enrolled in your junior or senior year, have a good citizenship record, is willing to make a firm commitment to the program, and must be recommended by at least two teachers.
This year, West Lincoln has three students in this program.
Emily enrolled in the Gaston College Youth Apprenticeship program because she has an interest in manufacturing-related fields. This program offers her a way to get into manufacturing without worrying about financial limitations. Emily hopes to go into mechatronics.
During his freshman year and in his Advanced Manufacturing I class, Zach's interest in the apprenticeship program peaked. After hearing a class presentation from Gaston College on their Youth Apprenticeship program, Zach felt this would be a good opportunity for him. Since becoming a part of the program, he has acquired an internship/job with Aptar. Zach says, "If you are looking to get into the engineering field, this is an excellent opportunity." On top of taking advantage of the earn while you learn with no college debt, Zach has learned that engineering is not just a job; it's a career.
Blake, a junior, was recently accepted into the apprenticeship program. He applied because he felt it would open up a lot of career opportunities. Blake has always enjoyed electrical work and hopes to work as an industrial electrician. Being a part of the apprenticeship program will help his dream of becoming an electrician come true.
