CELEBRATING MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ALL YEAR LONG
We celebrated the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 20, 2020, and it marked the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy.
This day is observed each year on the third Monday in January, and it is celebrated as “a day on, not a day off,” as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. I hope you all had an opportunity to perform a day of service.
The day may be over but there is still plenty of work to do. To help fully honor Dr. King and his legacy, here are some ways you can continue to honor a man and celebrate a movement that continues to challenge and break barriers.
1. Volunteer in a way that gives back to the black community directly.
2. Recognize and value the full, comprehensive history of Dr. King, and the racial justice movement.
3. Recognize and appreciate the strides Dr. King made, while also recognizing the change still needed.
4. Commit to starting more meaningful conversations about racial justice, and take action against racial injustices.
5. Donate to organizations working for racial justice
Finally, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, “Be a bush if you can't be a tree. If you can't be a highway, just be a trail. If you can't be a sun, be a star. For it isn't by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are,” Because here at Bergen Technical High School in Teterboro, we strive to be the best! - Karoline Jones

LAW & LITERATURE COLLABORATE
Grade 11 AP English Language and Grade 9 Law and Justice shared in a cross-over lesson, synthesizing techniques in analyzing rhetorical strategies in arguments--in famous works of Law and Justice from the past few centuries. Students engaged in discussions about a variety of texts; grade 9 students are working to cultivate use of rhetorical strategies in preparation for the annual Debates later this year!
Arlene Rodriguez and Ms. Hernandez culminated our rhetoric unit with an interactive lesson by breaking down MLK’s letter.
The law major is so grateful to Ms Hernandez for her time and knowledge in equipping our students with the knowledge to be better persuasive speakers and writers. Skills needed for law!! - Marcella Hernandez, Genieve Allard and Sharon Genicoff
