Reader's Workshop
So far, in reading we have been working on theme, tone, and mood. Let’s start with theme... We read a story, then we thought what was the life lesson in the story. For example, let’s say the story is about a bird who learns to fly. The theme may be keep trying until you succeed. So, now let us talk about tone. Tone is what the author thinks of the story, so if it were a letter that would be tone. Mood is how you feel after reading the story. For example, a story about a sad duck might make you depressed. That is mood. And that is what we have focused on in Readers Workshop!
Writer's Workshop
Welcome friends! You're gonna hope this never ends! Right now we're writing realistic fiction stories and most of us are done! And we’re going to share them with our really super awesome 2nd grade buddies and with you at our conferences if we picked Writing as one of our subjects. Our second grade buddies are also going to share their stories with us! After we finished our stories, we met with teachers to edit and revise our stories. For example, we made the beginning more interesting and the conclusion a better wrap-up. We tried to make our readerss feel like there wasn't anything else in our story. Then, we learned how to order adjectives and how to add quotation marks. Did you know that every time a person speaks it should be on a different line?? That's how readers understand who is talking in the story. Also, just today, we made an About the Author! We also got to make the cover page. We got to change the font and and add a picture to it. After that, we put our books together! So, now we're REAL AUTHORS! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! Our next unit is ESSAYS!
Math
Hi! This is Brenden Hakstol and Jack Curry reporting live about math. This month, we have done a lot of different things in math. Here are some examples: we did what’s my rule tables, symmetry, angles, and number stories. You name it, we learned it. Lately, it's been tricky in math because we are learning fractions and decimals. We learned how to compare fractions with the same denominator which was easy for everyone, and we also learned how to compare them if they had different denominators which was wayyyyyyyyyyyy trickier. Mrs. Kaubin taught us a few strategies and each of us do it a little different. Then, we learned how to order fractions on a number line. We learned that in fourth grade, drawing pictures was only a way to check our work, and that using a number line to order fractions is way better because if you draw pictures, you could mess up how equal the pieces are and get the wrong answer. But with a number line, you should be fine. After that, we learned about decimals. Mrs. Kaubin taught us that decimals are like money, so one tenth is really like one dime. There are ten dimes in a dollar, so ten tenths in one whole. We learned that the decimal point's name is "AND". Meet "AND" >>>> . That's it for now! Keep up to date with math because it's going to get harder!!
Science
Hi! This is Jasper and Ben. We will be talking about Science this month. So far in science, we learned that electromagnetism is what junk yards use to move metal. So, Mrs. Kaubin gave us junk to move. We have been trying to get all of our junk to the other side of our circuit. We have been trying to move it with a steel rod. We had to wrap a special wire around the rod that makes the rod magnetized but the wire had to be connected to a battery after. We had to show Mrs. Kaubin that we could pick up some junk and then she gave us another battery to make the magnet stronger. So then we could pick up all of the junk and the rod will get more power. And we had to answer how many winds of wire does it take to pick up all of your junk. Also, when we winded the wire it can’t touch the rubber. It has to be just above the tip. If it if it touched the rubber it would take away some energy because rubber is an insulator. Science is SO FUN!
Social Studies
We're here to talk about Social Studies. The best thing we did this month in Social Studies was we learned about our local government and state government. Our local government is Haddonfield and our state government is NJ. Both of those have three branches like the country's government, but there are a few different names for things. For example, we don't have a president of Haddonfield, we have Commissioners. And, the House of Representatives isn't called that in NJ, it's called the General Assembly. After that, we learned how to make our voices heard by doing a project where we decided on something we wanted changed in our school and we made speeches and videos about it. We sent them to Mr. Bissinger and we're waiting to hear back from him about all our concerns like better bathrooms, sit wherever you want at lunch, water outside at recess, and less homework.
After that, our government projects were due. We each got to share our projects! Most people did Google Slides, but some people did videos or games. First we will talk about the videos. The first video was Sara's. It was a game show and she had to answer questions.
Drew's video was him as a news reporter going around Haddonfield. Dardyn's video was her telling everyone about government. Then, there were GAMES! The first game we will talk about is Nathan’s game. Te goal of the game is to get all the way around the board. FIrst, you start at the start line and to advance you answer questions about the three branches of government. The first person to get to the end wins. The second game we will talk about is Ben’s. To win Ben’s game, you have to get to the end of the board. To get to the end, you have to answer questions on the three branches of government. The next game we will talk about is Brenden's game. His game was trivia. There were two teams the team that had the most cards won. To get a card you had to get a question correct. All of the games were so cool and fun - those were just some of them. Thanks for reading! And Mrs. Kaubin says to thank you for helping us with our projects!
Diversity - Teaching Tolerance
Hello there people!
In class we read a book called “CHOCOLATE MILK POR FAVOR?”. It was teaching us about tolerance and diversity. I know you are wondering what diversity is, so let teacher Maeve and Jared tell you.
Teacher Maeve: I will be teaching you about diversity. Diversity is the difference between 2 or more things/peoples. For example, Maeve and Jared are different genders. Maeve is a girl and Jared is a boy. Jared is going to talk about tolerance now. Byeeee!
Teacher Jared: Hello people! I’m here to talk about tolerance. Tolerance is accepting people that are different than you. For example, let's just PRETEND I don't like Maeve for some sort of reason. If we sat next to each other all year, I would need to learn how to tolerate her. Thanks for reading!
Borough Hall
Yo, Yo, Yo! This is Nora, Tessa and Dardyn! We went on a walking field trip to Borough Hall!
We had so much fun. We have been learning about government and that is why we went to Borough Hall. We saw a jail cell in the basement. Also, we saw a lot of cool badges. Then we pretended to be the mayor, the clerk, the commissioner, and the solicitor. Then we went to the court room and had a pretend meeting. We met the real life Commissioner's and we learned all about how our government in Haddonfield works. ATTENTION PARENTS: We have to go back to attend a meeting at night. You have to take us because our teachers won't be there and then we have to write a report. That is all!

Compliment Chain Update
This week in gym we got a compliment because we all were listening to the gym teacher and we played nicely. We did that by… not pushing each other and not saying mean words. We also followed the rules. As of now, we have 10 compliments!
Read Aloud
In read aloud, Mrs. Kaubin is reading Harry Potter #1. We all draw. And some people write books. You can also have an afternoon snack.
