Panther Times
Literacy Month
Hello Panthers,
One of our school's academic goals this year is to improve in the area of Reading. To do this we have asked that all students to read 20mins a school day all year long. For the month of October we decided to put together a little incentive. We have challenged our advisory classes to keep track of every student that reads 20mins a night (worth 1 point) and at the end of the month the top 3 advisory classes in each grade will receive a pizza party. So please support your student by encouraging and monitoring their reading all month long.
Research supports that if families do these three things, students are more successful at school and here is how you can help with this.
Monitor: Student planners. Students will record learning objectives and assignments in their planners.
Encourage: Students to use the organizational tools provided.
Support: Please make sure your student comes prepared everyday with iPad, binder and planners.
Reminder: School Pictures will be during the school day on October 12th.
Best Regards,
Rolland
School Wide Funderaiser...Coming
Hello HRMS Families!
We are the PTO and we would like to send you a message regarding our upcoming fundraiser.
Prior to last school year, HRMS did not have a PTO. Last year, we created one with the aim to bridge the gap between the families and the teachers and to help support our students. In getting our PTO off the ground, in January we organized a last minute coffee/tea fundraiser and we ended up raising about $5000. With that money, we were able to fund end-of-year out trips for the students, purchase supplies requested by the teachers, help purchase updated equipment for the STEM shop and celebrate our teachers with a catered meal during appreciation week.
As we continue our mission to support our students and the teachers we hope to build on what we started last year. To do that, we are running our primary fundraiser in October and November with the aim to get everyone their coffee and tea in time for the holidays. We are hoping this year we can double our sales (at the very least) and we are optimistic that we can do that!
On Monday October 16th, we will be sending out coffee/tea order forms to all of the students through their advisory classes with the deadline/due date to turn in orders and money on Monday, November 6th. As we know, middle schoolers aren't always the most forthcoming with what is going on at school, so we wanted to be sure to give all of you a heads up to check in with your student and encourage their participation if at all possible.
There will be prize drawings for students who sell even one bag, bigger prize drawings for kids who sell a few more along with prizes for top sellers in each grade, prizes for the top advisory classes in each grade as well as a special treat for everyone in the top selling overall grade. But while there are some individual incentives for the kids to help out, the major prize is that we will have more funds to grant teacher requests, help support more student outings and activities and generally just do what we can to make school a bit more engaging for everyone.
We will also need some volunteers to help with sorting coffee/tea on November 17th. Please email us directly at hoodrivermiddleschoolpto@gmail.com if you would like us to keep you on the tentative list for helping out with that.
If you would like us to add you to the PTO mailing list for volunteering opportunities throughout the year, please click the following link: (Note, there is no obligation to volunteer by filling out the form, it just makes it easier to reach out to the families that might be interested in helping out.)
And finally, if you are not interested in coffee/tea, but still want to support the students and teachers, you are more than welcome to donate to the PTO directly at the link below. As of this year, our PTO is now a registered non-profit, so we can also issue donation receipts upon request.
Thank you for your time and here's to a successful fundraiser!

COUNSELOR CONNER
This month we are talking about TEAMWORK in Advisory. Students in 8th grade worked together to write a unique classroom agreement. We had fun with it and each class created a poster to hang above their door. Students will vote on their favorite poster and the winning advisory class will earn a reward!
It is also Suicide prevention month. The prevention department visited during lunch with stickers and treats, and the students learned about positive mental health strategies as well as who to call for help. 988 is a suicide and crisis hotline available 24 hours via call or text.
School counselors visited all health classrooms this month to cover topics such as local mental health resources, sources of strength (strength wheel below), and coping strategies when dealing with stress.
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your child.
